Does a Paladins Smite Multiply ?

And throwing Power Attack into the equation starts to make it really messy... for the critter on the receiving end of the lance that is!

Throw in the Tremendous Charge feat from the DLCS book (on a charge, use mount's Str modifier to damage instead of rider's... lance has pass a DC8 Fort save or shatter).

I think the horse will explode...

Yup, definitely--of course, since you've traded special mount away, you probably need Leadership or the Draconic Cohort feat to grab a mount-worthy cohort (and/or one that has more Strength than the rider).

Picture now a Paladin with the Charging Smite ability from PHBII (2x smite damage on a charge, in exchange for special mount). He makes a mounted charge with a lance (2x damage) and scores a critical hit. Damage would be 4d8 + (Str bonus x4) + (smite damage x5)!!!

That has GOT to hurt!

In my last game my 6th level paladin did a spirited charge with his mounted lance and got a critical hit. Yay! I think that is x5 damage. He wasn't smiting though, and his total damage came to 26.

Did I mention that he is a halfling paladin? Who rolls badly? :heh:

Now picture a Paladin 10/Cavalier 10 doing a smite on an Unstoppable Charge and doing a critical hit. That's x7 damage! It'd be like in the Star Wars movies, when the TIE Fighter explodes and the X-Wing flies through the blast!

Only with more blood.

IIRC, it's only extra die damage that doesn't get multiplied. Since smite isn't extra die damage, it multiplies (just like Gremlins fed after midnight! :p ).
Exactly - any extra damage which is expressed as a set figure (Smite, STR bonus, Weapon Specialization, Favored Enemy etc.) gets multiplied; any extra figure expressed as additional dice (Sneak Attack, Flaming Weapon etc.) does not.

Yea ... the campaign I played in that had a Halfling Paladin was the one where I played Grimbold The Mighty, goblin rogue.

The GM even gave me "Bolt" as a bonus feat (if reduced to 1/2 or fewer HP from an attack you may choose, as an immediate action, to drop everything held and take a Withdraw action ... I used that feat ALL THE TIME).

Grimbold's stock in trade was, upon my hearing: "Roll For Initiative" to run and hide, immediately. Even if he got Init (with Improved Init he usually did) ... no Sneak Attacks, just with the running and the hiding. I spent the entirety of one climax combat hiding in a barrel of ale. When the GM would get to me I'd say: "Still have X rounds left holding my breath ... I continue hiding in the barrel." Then, on the last round, he stood up in the barrel like an ugly little Ahnold Schwarzenhoofer in "Predator" with his bow and got a sneak attack in to kill the last badguy.

I totally got away with this method of roleplaying, and got many kudos from the table as a whole, because the Halfling Paladin so completely dominated combat I didn't need to show up. Just riding around with that lance skewering monsters with Rideby and Spirited Charge, usually taking them out with one pop apiece. I wouldn't have tried to play the useless coward otherwise.

Nope. Damage is (unless I misunderstand the ability):

(d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2)) + (d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2)) + (d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2)) + (d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2))

You do not multiply the parts of the damage, you roll the damage more than once - if you look at it that way it's easier to understand.

Thus, in this case, it comes out to 4d8 + (4 x STR bonus) + ( 8 x Smite damage).

Right?
I went over this ability again yesterday. It adds +2/class level to your smite damage if you´re charging. So a Paladin 10 with Str 18 and Cha 16, while charging with a lance and the Spirited Charge feat does:

1d8 (lance) + 4 (Str) + 10 (smite) + 20 (Charging Smite) twice, or 2d8+68 damage

If he crits on that charge, the damage is 4d8+136.

If we're talking about a Paladin 10/Cavalier 10, with the Unstoppable Charge ability, the damage becomes 5d8+170 on a charge, or 7d8+238 on a crit!!!!
