Does anybody actually like Desmodu?

IMHO Grimlocks are just fine as Desmondu without the steroids. They're blind, they have blindsight, they live underground -- why not just toss them some bats and have done?

Again IMHO, Desmondu are one of the dumbest things in the MM2 -- and that is saying a lot.

You would think... Maybe that's why the damn guys are popping up everywhere all of a sudden... Desmodu have been crushing the drow and now they're showing up everywhere!

i am unimpressed with desmodu, but then i haven't really taken the time to give them more than a cursory glance.

I really like bats, and really like the idea of an anthropomorphic bat race that plays up what's cool about bats, which is probably why I don't really like desmodu. I would prefer small critters that could plausibly fly on their own, probably skittering across ceilings and walls like those cinematic Moria goblins, not hulking monstrosities who ride even bigger bats. A race that kind of combined the classic South American and Asian bat lore (cultures that recognized that having bats around to devour insects is not a bad thing) with the darker European bat lore (perhaps the race is cursed to be more susceptible to a particular strain of vampirism). Putting a bat face and fur on an ogre-sized critter just weirds me out; it seems more like trying to rationalize a giant race with blindsight so they can really challenge PCs than any sort of clever use of bats.

Of course, I don't use gnolls as written, either. You show me something that looks like a hyena, I want it to act like a hyena...

Ill have to agree with Hung on this one. I love snails too, but not in a Peppermint Patty to Charlie Brown sort of way, nor in a Hillbilly to sheep sort of way.
