Does anyone know if Gary Gygax ever posted the history TSR leading up to D&D? What I am talking about is the the days before D&D took off when he and TSR were a struggling company. I for one one would like to read that. I would also like to know what they were thinking when no one at first was playing the game.

There are several articles from his "From the Sorcerer's Scroll" series in The Dragon and Dragon Magazine. Of them, I recommend these:

  • "D&D, AD&D, and Gaming" in TD 26
  • "Dungeons & Dragons: What It Is and Where It Is Going" in TD 22
  • "Gary Gygax on Dungeons & Dragons: Origins of the Game" TD 7
  • "View From the Telescope Wondering Which End Is Which" in TD 11

The articles in TDs 7, 22 and 26 probably offer the greatest insight into the early development of the game, with TD 11 adding some but not as much. I'll post over on the Acaeum to see if anyone else can chime in with some better suggestions. (Several of those articles were also reprinted in the Best of Dragon Magazine Vol1 or Vol2, as well as the Dragon Arcihve, of course [though not the Annual piece]).
