hmmm...

OD&D fanatics believe that is how the game was MADE to be PLAYED
1st Edition champion the name of GYGAX. (TM)
2nd Edition point to the multitude of campaign setting and say "LOOK WHAT WE HAVE CREATED!"
3rd Edition fantatics cannot fathom D&D before 2000.
3.5 Think the new D&D is L33t. D00d3rs.

They all have thier fanatics. Find balance in all editions.

That was your moment of zen.

PS. I like generic clerics, in much the same way I like meatloaf. Its wholesome and satisfying, but I need more flavor before I get sick of it.

Not sure of the reason, but it'd be nice if he can find something positive to contribute, once in a while.

it would be nice to see something Original too.

i happen to play this game. it is always good to keep up with what's happening....even if rerun died.

believe it or not i was around here when Eric ran the boards.

and same with the WotC site when it was www.tsr.com

and the alt. newsgroup sites.

and any place else i could find.

i am a fan of D&D. just some versions are not as inspiring to me.

nor are the gamers who play them. :p

I really liked the specialty priests in 2e. And interestingly, though it never amounted to any game mechanics, when I played 1e, everyone always figured out what diety they followed for their clerics. If for nothing more than what to write in the slot on the character sheet. Come to think of it, even non-clerics would try and put something there.

I created my own custom pantheon for my world in 2e, including quite a lot of variety in skills and special abilities, as well as domains. They were all tailored to the diety - like clerics of the god of time who, upon reaching high levels, started to slow down or even stop aging, and so forth. It gave a lot of flavor to the clerics and made things interesting.

When 3e came out, I ended up taking all of the 2e customized pantheon and rewriting it for the new rules. I kept a lot of the special abilities and other adjustments in - so I still have speciality priests for 3e, in that sense.

So for 1e, I always had a diety for the clerics I played. It just seemed too strange not to, though with the types of campaigns we ran then, it probably didn't matter to much what name was filled in that slot. I much prefer the flavor of specialty priests - as someone else said, even with the variations in 3e, clerics seem rather generic in their combat and spell choices a lot of the time.
