Does grappling take two free hands?

kreynolds, the question was if you could start a grapple with two weapons in your hands or if you have to have one hand free. What's your problem with that question :D? Or are you *gasp* trolling? ;)

I don't have a problem with the question. I just don't see what he's finding so confusing. You use your hole body or take a -20. The FAQ entry says it all.

Nope. When I troll, I'll let you know. It's too time consuming to troll and participate in the same discussion, so I just participate. :p

What I find confusing is that in the grappling rules of the ph it says I can still attack with a light weapon while grappling. So does that mean I can grapple with one hand?

And the -20 rule is for improved grapple, so its not an issue in this discussion.

1) You can grapple with items in your hands, if you grapple with your whole body. I believe you get a -2 to your grapple checks when you have a shield strapped to your arm, though I can't find that errata/faq :(
2) If you grapple with one hand (taking -20) that hand would have to be free.
3) The -20 option is NOT exclusive to creatures with the improved grapple ability. Any creature initiating a grapple check can choose to take a -20, which means not grappling with the whole body.
4) You don't drop your weapons when you are grappled, the opponent needs grapple checks to relieve you of your items.

A part from kreynolds post above:
A character also could use the -20 option, but as you point out, the character also would have to use the two-weapon fighting rules.
So this option is open to all creatures. It isn't usefull for many characters, because unless your large or bigger and have improved grapple it costs you a lot without a lot of gain.
