D&D 5E Does it pay to wait to purchase new D&D Books? Wondering if I should preorder Tales from the Yawning Portal

A Title Much Cooler Than Anything on the Old Site
Tales from the Yawning Portal is currently available for pre-order from Amazon for 10% off the list price.

Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, is currently 23% of the list price and when I bought it via pre-order it was 40% off the list price.

SCAG had a better Amazon pre-order deal than TFYP, but the current discount off list price is still more than double that of TFYP's pre-order price.

Have others found pre-ordering from Amazon to generally be the better deal than buying post release?

You can get a better price by waiting for sales and discounts. But you have to pay attention and wait, regularly checking back.

But, pre-ordering means you automatically get the lowest rate Amazon posts in the next three months. Which is good.

Thanks, I guess the three-month guarantee is nice. I'll probably pre-order. Unlike the adventure paths that I'll read but will wait many months before I play them, I could see throwing in something from TFTYP into my current campaign.

Curiosity, when does Amazon and an FLGS actually charge your credit card? i.e. do you pay now or later?

My FLGS charges up front, Amazon charges when they prepare the shipment (hence the preorder guarantee to lock in the best price between ordering and the shipment processing).

In the US there are laws against charging a credit card before an item is in stock and ready to ship. I think this is specifically for credit cards only, not debit cards or pre-paid cards. Those are treated like you paid with cash or a check and is taken out right away.
