Does using a whip to trip provoke an attack of opportunity?

The whip provokes an attack of opportunity when used.

However, under the description of the trip manuever, using a weapon to trip does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Does that mean if a whip is used as a regular melee attack, it provokes an attack of opportunity, but if it is used for a trip, it doesn't?

The trip itself doesn't, but using the whip does.

It's the same as how a Charge does not provoke an AoO, but leaving a threatened square while charging does.

So you provoke the AoO whatever you use the whip for.

Like Hyp said. But keep in mind that your foe can't take an AoO unless he can reach you with his melee attack. And since the whip has a 15' reach, you can usually manage to not be in range of anyone.

Indeed, LP, you hit what I was just looking up...The whip only provokes an AoO if used in melee, like a ranged weapon. This presupposes that the opponent trying to take the AoO is in melee with you. Given the whip has a range of 15' it becomes somewhat more difficult for that oppoent to achieve his AoO. I have had NPC's and monsters use the whip to good effect and have not had the AoO be a problem. Eventually the PC's tired of getting popped with the whip and closed to do battle with the wielder, who dropped it and used a real weapon. An ogre with a large whip has quite a reach and can make live pure hell for an unarmored spell caster lurking in the "safety" zone behind the ironclad muscle.

Next time, use a whip-dagger from Sword and Fist. :]

I'm not sure if it's all that bad:

(a) The whip only does nonlethal damage.
(b) The spellcaster may still benefit from soft cover.
(c) You don't threaten the area into which you can make a whip attack, so the spellcaster will not provoke an AOO from the ogre when he casts spells.

Well, you can ready to disarm the spellcaster of his spell components ;)
