I just started a new Elf Barbarian in Alsih2o's campaign.

He's mildly retarded and uses a heavy flail :]

Mildly? Str-19, Int-5

He is vapid, speaks little common (which edge roleplays well, like when he walked up to an NPC and said "Asti spumante, Martini mix!" ) And tends to solve problems with his flail and relieve boredom by seeing if nearby objects can stand up to a head-butt.

Mildly?

The only elf I'm currently playing is a cleric of Solonor Thelandira (elven god of archery and hunting), so she certainly does use a longbow.

In fact, she's so much better at the longbow than at any melee weapon, that she's far more likely to take a 5' step back, in order to shoot a melee opponent, than she is to draw her melee weapon -- which does happen to be a longsword. ;)

Because an elf gets those free, yes! An elf rogue or mage can really pull out a surprise as those classes often have a high dex to begin with. Sneak attack from 30' away and then close in on the melee. Truly awesome when you have a 20 dex.

An elf ranger I play uses both a longbow and longsword. He prefers the longbow, but will use the longsword when situations dictate it.

Hm.. I voted yes, but it's not entirely correct:

I play a star elf sorcerer, and he does have a bow, and even has an elven thinblade and an elven shortblade (they're something of a daisho for him - the traditional swords of mithral nobility). But he hasn't used them much. If he uses a weapon at all, he'll just strike out with the spear he usually carries (which also serves as a kind of wizard's staff - though the thing isn't magical) But magic missiles and ligntning bolts are so much better for striking at enemies (and when he gains access to 6th-level spells, he'll get chain lightning and exchange lightning bolt for fireball.)

Bow, yes. Sword, yes. Axe, as well. Twohanded hammer, for fun. Throwing knives, for the machine gun effect. Throwing axes, for the kewl whirling. Spear, for the reach and hunter style. Xbow sometimes for one-handed shots. Whip, because Zorro is cool.
