Domain Spells and Wand Activated Spells

Fangor the Fierce

First Post
I am wondering about the ruling on a certain situation. If I have a 6th Level Cleric, with access to the Strength Domain, he/she would gain Enlarge Person as a Domain Spell for Level one.

Would that enable the character to be able to use a Wand of Enlarge Person? Enlarge Person lists as a Wiz/Sor1 AND Strength1 spell.

I understand that the wording says the spell that the wand has stored must be on your spell list, but does access to the Strength Domain, which grants you the spell qualify for this situation?

Thanks

Nope, domain spells are not added to the spell list, that's why you cannot prepare them into regular slots. Domain slots are special, as they allow you to prepare and cast (some) spells, which you do not actually have on your spell list.

Alas, no wand use via domain spells.

I don't believe Thanee is correct. I looked at the wording of the domain spell itself and it isn't clear. They definitely talk about a "domain slot" which is different than a normal spell slot. And he's right that you can't prepare say enlarge person (x2) because it can only fill a domain slot.

However, holy smite is an example of a spell that isn't on the cleric spell list; the only way to get the 4th-level holy smite spell is via the Good domain.

If you look on p.246 of the DMG, you'll see they price out a wand of holy smite. Why price out a wand that no one could use? It must be that if it is in your domain list that you can use it.

I haven't found anything in the RAW that says that specifically though, but the above holy smite example is the best extrapolation of the rules.

Yes, Thanee had a bit of a point to make, but I don't think it was the correct one.
Domain Spells do not become part of the Known Spell List. They do however become part of the Spell List. Meaning that it can't be memorized at that level, since that comes off the Known Spell List.

3.5 FAQ said:
Can my cleric of Pelor activate a wand of holy smite if he
doesn’t have the Good domain? After all, it’s on his deity’s
list of domain spells, so that’s the same as being on my
character’s spell list, right?

Wrong. Your character’s domain spells are indeed treated
as being on your class spell list for the purpose of using wands,
scrolls, and similar items, but that only applies for spells in
domains that your character has actually chosen. If you haven’t
selected the domain as one of your two domains, the spells of
that domain aren’t considered on your spell list (unless they’re
already on your spell list from your class, such as aid, which is
on all clerics’ spell lists and not just the spell lists of clerics
with the Good or Luck domain).
They will start calling you Fangor the Large and Fierce!

Well, there is only really one spell list, but I guess it's fair to argue either way... the spells are in a way known to you at least. :D

EDIT: Ah, that FAQ entry clears it up nicely, they really could have written that in the rules, too. :)

Well - I would have thought it would be easy. My phb contains a section with spell lists in it, and domain spell lists are part of that...
