Just finished watching the series a night or so ago.

HOLY CARP!

Anyone who has watched this has said "It got cancelled?! WTF?"

I suspect there is a level of professional jealousy going on with Joss and his buddy. Both have had thier endeavors cut out from under them. I suspect that there is an element of sabotage simply because NO ONE is allowed to be that successfull.

Hopefully we will get the Trilogy and then Universal will give Fox lots of money and then it will appear as a series on SciFi.

Anyways, gotta run.

Short answer:
Firefly was cancelled before it aired due to the short-sightedness of a handful of Fox execs.

Now that you've made it through the series, make sure you take the time to go back and watch them again w/ the commentary tracks turned on.

Don't get me wrong. I'm one of the first to like this "space western" TV series while everyone is skeptical. To the few former skeptics converted after seeing the DVD, I'm one of the first to say "Sheesh! What took you so long?"

I just don't want it on Sci-Fi or on any cable channel. That would force me to subscribe cable.

I hope they would return into TV syndication market. But for now, I'm waiting for the movie version. Perhaps it will spark interest as well as exposure to other network suits or TV production companies that want to distribute it.

Eh. I really think they would need the financial backing of a network to keep the quality of the show at the level it exhibited in its short run. While I know that there are sound reasons (including a higher level of creative independence) for going the syndication route, part of me remembers those cheesy early couple of seasons of ST:TNG and cringes...

No. Just spend $100 (one time, not per month) on an antenna and you get free on-air TV programs. I mean, how do you find the time to watch all 50-plus channels?

At least those two syndicated Trek series are rated way better than the other craps being financially backed by UPN. I mean if you're talking about special effects, ILM does all of TNG and some of DS9. In the story and character development department, they got that in spade. Not so for VOY and up until now, ENT.

And just so you know, Paramount had to cut their asking price in half for the current season to make it attractive for UPN to air it, confident that the revenue from merchandising will back the rest of their production budget. If you ask me, that's one hell of a gamble. Of course, if they needed more money, they could always terminate Braga's employment. Braga is no longer this season's showrunner, it's Manny Coto.
