Just start with the PHB and expand from there.

Actually, if you buy them on Amazon.com, you can get all three for $60.00 (and change).

Last time I checked, they were selling them for 30% off.

You have that backwards. Such rules are setting material, and not at all appropriate for a setting-free rulebook.

Greyhawk isn't a setting???

Couldn't the same statement be made about anything in the PHB? Lay on Hands could be considered "setting material". Magic spells could be considered "setting material". Pretty much anything in the books could be argued to be "setting material".

Get it free via SRD. I don't plan on purchasing the books for a long time, if ever, either, but I'll have the SRD asap.
