Double Weapons: Popularity?

I'm rather fond of quarterstaves. Other double weapons... not so much.

Though the idea of an Eyrosian Claws of the Dragon two-bladed sword wielder is becoming more attractive the more I think of it. :)

I like the Valenar double scimitar (Eberron). 'course, I like scimitars in general.

Counting quarterstaves I have seen 4 double weapons in my game.

Not counting quarterstaves I have seen 1, the spiked chain. Most double weapons get comments like 'wow, that's kewl', where kewl translates to 'really, really stupid!' Hooked hammers and dire flails get the coveted 'what, were they baked?' award.

I've seen a couple - one double sword and one urgrosh. Out of hundreds of PCs. The only ones really worth using are the ones with which you get a "free" proficiency. Quarterstaff, or the racial weapons if you're the right race. It's almost a totally wasted feat if you could instead choose Oversized Two Weapon fighting (and really, it's not that great even if you can't). The lone advantage I can see is if you frequently wish to switch back and forth from two-weapon to two-handed-weapon styles during the same combat. A double weapon allows you to do that without needing to drop the off hand weapon or spend an action to stow it.

I've run 2 campaigns since 3rd edition came out (plus some stand-alone adventures with a group of friends in my home town), and I think I've used two NPC's with double weapons. One orc double axe, and one double bladed sword. However, in my current campaign (3 years in running in April) I have 6 players, and two of them use a double bladed sword <sigh>. A bit annoying to have two players who both compete over the same, very rare, exotic weapons.... One of them has even started a "fighter school" that teaches the two bladed sword to others. I guess I'll be seeing a lot of young fighters who has graduated from there

Personally, I think double weapons (other than the quarterstaff) are a bit, well, cheesy, but as long as the player is having fun I guess I'll survive :).
