Down with magic items!

Angcuru, I'm not specifically talking about DnD. And there are plenty of ways to make it so that you don't need that +5 dragonscale armor at 20th level, or any other protective gear: house rules. Anyway, I dislike higher-level play. IMHO, it's the campaign, not the level, that makes it epic.

i never said anything about D&D......imagine walking around the streets of L.A. wielding a Chaingun and wearing dragonscale armor. that's just not right..:D

The more exotic an item the more a character is defined by that item. What is more exotic that magic?

Peacock tongue as an appetizer is more exotic than game magic, IMHO :)

I have to disagree with your thesis, that the more exotic an item is, the more a character is defined by that item. You can have an amazingly exotic, unique, strange item, but if it never enters your mind, and never comes out of your napsack, it won't define you.

An item becomes defining if it is powerful, you use it often, and it shapes how you deal with situations.

Buy FCTF! Buy FCTF! Buy FCTF!

Even if you disagree (as I do) with some of the power costings, FCTF is well worth the cost; it's loaded with ideas, of which the 'here's a way to balance out characters with no/fewer magic items with magic-loaded characters' is just one.

Kudos, RW

You DO kinda need that +5 Dragonscale Full Plate when you get to higher levels. kinda pointless to go fight other epic characters when your ac is somewhere between 20 and 26. or you could just go with the Forsaker class in Masters of the Wild. Maybe i'll play that next campaign...

Die. You'll play a Forsaker when you pry my dice from my cold lifeless fingers. And I'll rise as a wight and slay you, Ron, and Chris. And then we'll all game in the barrowmounds.

However, I'm working out rules for AC bonuses from class, so that you don't necessarily need to wear armor.

Just goes to show that you don't need magical items to do massive destruction! Just sharp minds ... a frag. grenade ... a flame thrower ... and a car ...

And therefore, we need frag grenades, flamethrowers and cars in D&D.

I guess part of what made it fun was the lack of that 'you are your gear' element that comes up so often in DnD-Jeph

So true. In my recent game I stripped the guys (captured by Preists of Talona) of all goods and placed into a muddy, garbage filled pit guarded 24/7 by Orges and lizardmen that drank to much. It took an entire session to get free and even then- they ran naked through the swamps. They had to arm themselves with rocks and wood. There were no mages in the group and one cleric whom I made a point of always interrupting his divine spell prayers so he was largely limited to low level spells that normally ended up for healing anyway.
