DPS Pally

First Post
I'm trying to make a DPS pally for our heroic tier campaign. we have a ranger, a wizard, and a fighter so far, and we already have a tank so i wanted to make a Pally who can keep up with their dps. Anyway to build a pally to do as much DPS as a Striker? I would prefer to have my main ability score be Charisma if possible. Also what starter tips do you guys suggest?

Be an avenger

You could take ardent vow instead of lay on hands, but as a Cha/Wis build you're NADs will be terrible and you still won't match a true striker (or an damage heavy fighter)

You may want to eye up a Paladin|Warlock hybrid. There are several fairly damaging builds out there. If that's not your cup of tea, I'd at least recommend MCing into a striker class to get your damage up a bit in your nova round.

What do you want out of being a Paladin?

If you want a Charisma-based, heavy armored warrior, make a human Knight or Slayer, and take Melee Training (Charisma). Take Disciple of Justice so you can spend your second wind on someone else's behalf, mimicking Lay On Hands.

If you must be a Paladin, make a Cavalier and keep Strength and Charisma equal. Charisma will fuel your damage for Holy Smite, Defender Aura, etc, and Strength will focus on your attacks. Take Virtue of Valor for the additional damage. As soon as possible, pick up an Executioner Axe.

Challadlock?

I just recently made a Tiefling hybrid Paladin/Warlock (con/wis) with Hybrid Training (Paladin Armor)... and what a ranged damage platform it seems to be. With the Crimson Legionairre, Crimson Fire, and Turathi Weapon Training Feats upping the melee and ranged damage, he can be quite annoying, especially when lasering a critter that is blocked up by the defender. It is a very interesting combination as a heavily armored melee and ranged damage dealer.

I look forward to having a chance to play him.

Cha-paladins can dole out significant pain by abusing radiant damage and (imposed) radiant vulnerability.

Str-paladins can bring the pain by being strong, though this is most noticeable at low level.

That build guide is excellent.

I built a Longtooth Shifter Straladin for a paragon arena-style game earlier this year, coincidentally using most of the juicy stuff from that guide (I hadn't discovered or read it yet), and it was fairly effective at dishing out pain.

At 11th, his Holy Strike damage was in the 1d10+21 range, plus he could rage once a day for the entire encounter for an extra +2, plus longtooth shifting for another boost, and he was awfully fond of power attacking Holy Strike for 1d10+27. He was +18 to hit normally. His damage was enough that the party's two rogues were sometimes envious, and still grateful for the flanking. I don't know at what point he started to "come into his own" since I just built and started playing him as an 11th level character.

I can post him here if you think it would be helpful. I don't know if this is the most damaging build (it probably isn't), but it certainly was effective.

If CHA primary isn't a requirement, a Half-Orc STR Paladin with a Mordenkrad is just beyond sick at heroic tier. Blood of the Mighty or Heedless Fury combined with the Half-Orc's Furious Assault and Divine Strength can one-shot enemies. Get your hands on a Badge of the Berzerker, an Avalanche Hammer, and a Horned Helm later in the tier to become a force of nature on the battlefield.

As a bonus, the Blessed Strength feat allows a Half-Orc to use STR for Divine Challenge, which combines nicely with the Mighty Challenge feat to ensure that your mark punishment is still quite, quite effective.

Flying enemies... are a problem.

That all being said... your party is lacking a leader, and Sir Smashalot here isn't a suitable replacement for that role. I suspect you prefer a CHA-based Paladin, mechanically, for the emphasis on the leader-secondary role. It'll be a harder battle to create a Defender|Leader|Striker than just a Defender|Striker.

Definitely take the 2nd level utility bless weapon. At low levels it completely replicates a striker's class feature for one encounter - +1 to hit and +1d6 for the whole fight. Not so impressive at high levels, but at low levels your party's strikers will be very jealous (unless you run 6 or 7 fights a day)
