Dr Who - Army of Ghosts [spoilers likely]

Plane Sailing

Astral Admin - Mwahahaha!
I love these new Dr Who episodes, and this one is great!

The opening pre-credit dialog by Rose grabbed my attention, the story developed beautifully, and the final reveal was stunning. I dare say some smart people will have seen it coming but it completely blindsided me!

Roll on next Saturday, that's all I can say!

As we in the USA wait and wait for the current season. Sci Fi a couple of weeks ago finished season one. So we wait and wait and ..............

That's more like it! A big improvement on the previous two episodes. The hype engine had been in overdrive for weeks before, with so many rumours flying around that I didn't know what to expect.

Significant things:

1) There's at least one ex-soap actress who isn't going to be the next companion.

2) It was actually good to see Micky again.

3) The Tyler's live near my old flat in London.

It is a welcome turn around from the old Babylon 5 days :)

I can just say that you have some cool stuff to look forward to!

Ah, what the heck. The thread is spoiler tagged, so I'll just go ahead and talk. Anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled, stop reading the thread now.

This episode had quite a few surprises for me. I didn't see Mickey returning, though it's pretty plausible given that the Cybermen showed up. And his time in the parallell world seems to have actually made him competent, as opposed to a tin dog. And I really didn't see the Daleks showing up again.

Too bad they killed off the black chick that was supposed to be in the running for companionhood. She was definitely easy on the eyes.

Oh, and I liked where the psychic paper finally failed. Shows that these goons are pretty competent.

I wonder if Captain Jack will show up in the finale, seeing as he's supposed to be the star of the upcoming Torchwood series.

I think the thing that pleased me the most is that unlike the trailer for Bad Wolf last year, the preview for Army of Ghosts didn't give away the 'big suprise'.

Excellent, excellent episode.

I enjoyed it- and I'm definitely looking forward to the next episode. Torchwood finally shows up, though, after all the blatant plugs throughout the season, I don't think it quite lived up to the hype.

I'm guessing that the Daleks that showed up from the voidship were likely refugees from the Time Wars- the voidship would certainly explain how they managed to survive it, although I'm not quite clear on what their relationship is to the Daleks in the season finale of last season. Didn't look like there were very many of them at the end, although the trailer for next episode seemed to have more.

Speaking of numbers- with millions of Cybermen, how did Mickey and crew ever get the upper hand on them in the parallel Earth? I liked the Cybermen much more this time around- they seemed more menacing and competent than they did in the previous Cybermen arc. Still kind of wished that the original alien Cybermen were the ones they brought back, but this is a good substitute. Can't wait to see the results of their clash with the Daleks. They seem to have upgraded themselves as well- now they have wrist blasters and not just the shocking grasp ability.

So psychic paper works on electronic locks? Interesting.

Good to see Mickey again, and it looks like we get alternate Pete Tyler next episode as well.

Enjoyed the Doctor's showdown with Yvonne over the ghost shift.

I somehow don't think Rose will actually die- or at least, won't remain dead by the end of next episode. Seems a little heavy handed for them to start out that way and stick with it. What are some other ways a person can die? Maybe the Doctor abandons her and breaks her heart? That would be a figurative way of "dying."

Anyway, just one more week, and we'll see how it all goes. Hope Captain Jack shows up, although on his website it says that he won't (hope that's just a red herring).

Wonder when/if they'll finally start doing more than 13 eps a season?

Actually, it did, but only if you were watching really close...

I thought too much of this episode was set-up for next week's episode. The preview had revealed the Cybermen to us, and the fact that they appeared so early on also ruined that. That being the case, I found myself thinking "Get on with it!" rather too much.

I did really like the pre-credits bit, and I really hope they stick to their guns on this one. Also, I rather hope they don't go and kill off all the Daleks again - it makes it harder to keep bringing them back if you're going to wipe them out every time they appear.

Looking forward to next week!
