DR wigginess

...so the semi concensus is...

if it makes my character more powerful but doesn't fit into the internal concept of Good and Evil energies awesome but if I can't use it to make me as powerful as possible, it doesn't matter how well the explanation fits into the internal continuity of the Good v. Evil energy paradigm.

Sheesh!

Powerful good is a force can create a field of force that repels those things which are not opposed to it...as can powerful evil. The opposite forces cancel each other out.
It's not that we, or at least I, think that the idea of a good creature having DR/Evil doesn't amke theoretical sense. But this is a magic piece of clothing, not a naturally occuring manifestation of the forces of good. Somebody made it from scratch, they intentionally built it to work that way. I know if I were that guy I would not have built it that way. Indeed, I would question what that person was thinking.

It's a thouroughly in-character response.

And on another note...don't the rules say that the natural attacks of creatures automatically have the ability to overcome the natural DR of the creature? So demons would inherently be able to claw thru the DR of their type?

DC
Oh yes, that's very true. I had forgotten about that.

Here's my solution to the above issue: to create new items that offer DR *only* against a single type of damage, similar to the effect of a Resist Energy spell. e.g. a Mantle of Holy Protection, specialized to shield one against Demonic attacks, offers DR 5/any nonevil.

Incorrect. It specifies in the monster description. For example, Pit Fiend has DR 15/Good and Silver, and its natural weapons are Evil-aligned and Lawful-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

I have to agree with other people in this thread. Good folks should be using DR 5/Good; Evil folks should be using DR 5/Evil. It's the same thing as a Sunblade for Good characters - I want to get my bonus vs. the Evil guys!

In general, I don't like the way alignment-based DR works. Nice idea, bad in practice. They've also broken the new DR ideas by adding spells that allow weapons to be made silver/cold iron/adamantite - so much for needing a golf bag. Then again, the golf bag idea was stupid.

I like the idea in Savage Species where characters can take a ritual to become their alignment type (it's more detailed than that, but that's the basic idea). So ultra-goody two-shoes goes, I wanna be really good and be able to penetrate DR/Good and does the ritual.

Just my thoughts ...
