Dragon #293 "Worldbuilding" contents

Can you dig it?

Yes, I can.

This issue is just what I need when I need it; this is the fifth good luck incident this week. Damn, when it rains it pours indeed...

Wow.

#293 sounds nice. I'll probably get my hands on it in September or so...

The lazy-a** suppliers here in Sweden haven't even got #291 yet. *sigh*

And since I haven't read it yet, what are the most unusual choices for PC monsters on that list?

I could almost pick at random. Ooze mephit and elder fire elemental come to mind. With the later, the rest of the party would have to be well into epic levels, putting it at something of a disadvantage in skill points if it chose rogue or bard.

Also, out in the Old West -- where men were men -- I imagine an awakened bison would be something of a novelty.

Back in Dragon #45 they had an item by Roger E. Moore called "Ring of Oak" that would allow a dryad to go adventuring. It was mostly intended for characters who had been reincarnated as one.

ECL 4 for a lizardfolk?!?!? Hmmm, I never considered the humble lizardfolk to be TWICE as powerful as the rather beefy saurials that were featured in Dragon lately and given an ECL of 2....

Yeah, the numbers definitely need to be tweaked. I was thinking more along the lines of 2 for a lizardfolk as well. That's what I've based my druid on....

Or -- if I'd been obsessive enough to thoroughly read through all eight columns -- I could have picked Tarrasque. In a level 80 party you'd have to take it for the roleplaying rather than the power.

Ethereal filchers are uncomfortably close to what a lot of gamers are like in real life, and octopusses gets gypped with a 2 weapon limitation, so I'd be surprised if people picked them as well.

Back in the earlier editions where Spirit Folk were somewhat bound to the bamboo grove or river they came from, I proposed that they could over come this limitation with a talisman of some sort which provided their link. The same thing would apply to a Dryad, if one decided to travel far away from their tree.

One Word: Bonsai!

Let the dryad carry her tree around with her!

Here's the thing. A lot of people hate it when an issue is completely devoted to the theme while others love it. Myself I could go either way. As long as the articles are good I don't care too much if they relate to each other or not. This looks like a very good issue in my opinion. I'm espescially looking forward to the Small Gods, Countrycraft and Planetouched articles.
Cheers.

i couldn't agree more: it does look liek a great issue. but it also doesn't look like a 'worldbuilding' issue, and thats a wee bit disappointing to me...

Just as long as they have the ECL for vegepygmies. Love them vegepygmies.

I wonder if ECL will become part of the standard stat block. It should be.

Looking forward to that monster PC book. I really dug the Complete Book of Humanoids, back in the day...
