Dragon #298: The Drow issue

So, what, Adopt a Tiefling?
The halfbreed thing is indeed a sticking point. I don't know about the details, but I think that they do have an X factor appeal to players who are susceptible to such because of the whole "having demon blood is kewl" thing - and that's the sort of foundation on which you need to build. Svirfneblin, for instance, do not have said X factor, and so would be a hopeless starting point.

Yuan-Ti are better than dark elves. I vote for them as the next to hold the "played to death" crown.

Librum Equitis 2 has a few PrCs based around Yuan-Ti and these suckers do have some presence in FR as well.

I think, instead of having Drow-Only, they should focus more on the entire Underdark. That way, they could have all that Drow and Illithids, Yaun-Ti, Kobolds, and all the normal stuff for those who complain about too much focus.

NEw mystique

Is it just me or is there a decided lack of information on the Gith races, Githyankee and Githzerai? I think these two races should be explored a bit more and they have buttloads of potential because there history, society and cultures are so alien. How baout some development outside of Planescape eh? Oh wait, I am getting into my Setting Proposal too much.

Then we have the goblins which have not really been defined at all except as little bastards that eat, sleep and ****. The goblins in the right hands could just about tear apart a high level party. Then again I am getting too far into my proposl again. Heh heh heh.

Ulterior Motive

There is an OBVIOUS reason why Dragon is doing a Drow issue....namely the upcoming mega-module called City of The Spider Queen .

Haven't you noticed that WOC uses the mags to pre-market upcoming projects? Maybe it's overkill, but it's good business on their part.

I like Drow every so often. Maybe it has been played out, but to the new gamers (people who have discovered D&D in the past 2-3 years), it hasn't.

I agree that they should focus more on the entire Underdark.
There are TONS of races that have been overlooked or completely forgotten.

  • Duergar - some may say that they're just dwarves in drow clothing, but I disagree. They just haven't been developed much.
  • Derro - Another missed opportunity. Think of how the Derro/Duergar interaction could be enhanced.
  • Neogi - Does anyone remember these creepy eel/spider slavers? I have them as my main underground foe in my campaign.
  • Rom - Undead subterranean giants - where did they go??
  • Skum - Just the name makes them cool.
  • Many more.....

I'd like to see something on these races and more.

Hmmm....maybe I'll send in a proposal to Dragon.

I'd rather see this Drow issue, then a seperate issue devoted to the other races ofthe Underdark. I agree that could be very interesting.

I'd much rather get a Drow issue than a Gnome or Halfling issue. But even those had a little stuff I could use.:)

I have to agree with Undead Pete about the Spider Queen adventure and linking Dragon.

Of course, I didn't think that the Neogi were large in the Underdark, and that Scum simply were slaves of the Aboleth.
