I heard there will be a 9th level variant called hoi polloi morph. Turns whole populations into harmless vermin, permanently.
Heheh. :) Sounds like a fun spell.

Ok notice the bold underlined sentence.

This looks like a typeo but if its HD = to Cater lvl that reallychanges things.

As on now Polymorph is targets HD or 15 which ever is less.

Though the SRD does not say this hmmmmmmm.
I may have also not said that there are size restrictions as well (there are). But as for HD=caster level up to 15, that looks about right.

So a party with a Wizard and Druid or Ranger can take all the Animal companions (Wolf, Medium sized) and turn them into say a Winter Wolf or a Dire Wolf or some other Large thing that has trip and all you do is add to the groups power.

Noe granted its not permenate but still.

Im mean you can then take the Druids Bear and have a Huge Dire Bear or something and still be in the Druids HD

If abneful polymorph can turn people into things that don't suck then this isn't much of a fix since you'll still turn the fights into stone ginats or wahtever. And the polymorph spell at 1/minute does solve the buff issue but it sucks for the utility purposes as mentioned above.

Hold well its good and bad. On one level yeah its great you can break free now, so less boredom. On the other level its much harder to rationalize not using coup de grace. Before I could say hey he's out of the fight, deal with active threats. Now i say he probably will be in the fight any second again take him out while I can. I see a lot more dead PCs in the future, unless I play my guys dumber than I like.

Well I'm really glad that they are changing Hold Person/Monster. I really *really* hate those spells.

Not just as a Player either, but as a DM as well. Basically, I don't like ANYTHING that can "insta-kill" a PC. That's just NOT what D&D is about *to me*. It's not Heroic. Isn't that why there is a HitPoint system, so that a simple commener with a knife can't come up and slit your throat while your sleeping?

Hold Person is just bad.. you are a sitting target open to Coup de Grace. Icky..

"Ok Bob, I know that you've written me a 10 page background for this guy, and you've stayed up thinking of all sorts of little personality traits for this guy and you thought of all sorts of strategies for him and gave him a really good defense, but you're now Held. You can't do anything. The Goblin next to you automaticlly criticals you and does 20 points of dmg, and I'm even being nice and saying that this is the only Gob that isn't a Rogue so there's no sneak attack dmg. So let's see, the initial Dmg didn't kill you, so now you have to make a Fortitude Save of 10 + 20 (dmg dealt), that's a Fort Save DC 30. Roll a 20 or your character DIES."

Anyone else thinks that's just plain out BS?

To pull a "James Hetfield";

Insta Kills: Baaaad
Heroics: Gooood

(thanks for listening to my little rant! :) )

You might want to give wiz/sor mre hp then because any fight they get in is a instant kill situaiton. Yeah bob I realize you speant 10 hours writing your backgorund, but like I rolled a 20 and I confirmed the hit so that'2 30 points of damage, sucks that you weant form full health to -10 dead in one hit but there you go.

:D

Boy, I must be in the minority here or something (or else others of the same opinion are remaining silent) but I was entirely satisfied with all of the spell changes introduced in the last Dragon Mag.

Love what they did with the hold spells (this is the one I didn't see coming). The hold spells should remain at their respective levels as they were far too powerful for their spell level anyway. Playing a wizard with the Hold Monster spell my party was able to wipe the floor with giants (and other big bad nasties with relatively low will saves) on a regular basis, let alone those fighter types in the earlier levels. Our 4th level party took out 3 8th level fighter-types with Hold Person (2 clerics, had more holds left to spare too, ack).

Polymorph spells look great, permanent poly can no longer be abused and to keep a beneficial form requires multiple spells cast. Well balanced here.

Haste was always too good, now its not. Of course the spell in revision form shines as a dim candle versus the bright nova that it is in its current form, but it remains moderately useful. Extra 30ft move (watch and see expeditious retreat changed to extra 30ft move too :p ), an extra attack with full attack, and some AC, reflex bonuses. Not bad, not great either. Those extra fighter attacks can add up though, perhaps the duration will be longer? 1 min/lvl? Still haven't printed the stats on it yet so who knows...

Harm/Heal looks good. Fills the niche it is really suppose to and goes from all or naught too, so remains useful to the battle at hand despite the save. Good.

Can't wait for July! hehe. :)
