Dragon 371 Table of Contents

Not sure why, but this kind of got me thinking about the idea of sort of re-imagineering the idea of templates in 4e for characters.

You could sue feats and multiclass feats/powers in a way similar to how the gladiator was done, but for things like Draconic, or Demonic, or tainted.

I guess kind of like how the spellplague thing works in FR huh?

Because vampires are evil, bloodsucking demons of the night and Eastern European folklore considered dhampir to be adept at detecting and killing them, which fits with both 4e's "The World Needs Heroes" (not "The World Needs a Rape Metaphor") theme and the fact that they are actually delving into real world mythology and folklore for things.

There was a nice, innocent time when vampires were evil and associated with rape. Now, they sparkle in the daylight and only feed on deer.

And I'm so very happy they're delving into real world mythology, except that this real-world mythology is, to me, crazy crazy lame.

In fact, vampirism as a blood-born disease/genetic abnormality/anything non-mystical is SUPER lame. One's either a vampire, or not. You can't have children, you can't feed on anything other than human(oid) blood, and you certainly can't be detected by a special race of Not-Vampires with daddy issues, who you yourself fathered, because you're apparently an idiot vampire with no friends.

That's all personal opinion, of course. :) I hope plenty of people have fun with the race.

You could easily convert it into a move action (and make it say, on par with the Shadar-kai power). Instead of a teleport, grant a movement + insubstantial. That way, when the paragon feat allows for phasing, then they can use the move action to move through objects + the phasing.

If you really wanted to go far out there, one could easily start playing with the notion. Instead of just being a "Half Ghost", they are a ghost, but one who can't go immaterial (except for the racial quality). Perhaps because their connection to the Shadowfell has been shunted. Or they are bound to something very corporeal (an object), and by resting they recede back into the object. This provides some interesting play (an enemy stealing the object, thereby capturing the ghost; one of the PCs constantly carrying the object, and the dynamic between the ghost and the PC).

Although honestly, I would be happy with a walking corpse; not a zombie, but a free-willed, intelligent body with some flesh. A necropalitan, a forsaken, etc.

For some reason this brought Rimmer from Red Dwarf to mind. :D

That's all fine and good, but apparently it doesn't mean we should stop mocking/looking down on people who might like to play one.

I recall the frequent letters to Dragon from people complaining that not everything in the last issue was tailored to their individual tastes.

Exactly. Vampires and associated stuff like dhampyrs has been done to DEATH...well, not in 4e...certainly not as a playable race....But that's not the point! C'mon, the thought that Dragon might stoop to covering content that's popular among fans...That's copping out! They should be trying to create weird, outre, niche stuff that nobody knew they wanted to play. Where are the myconids, for pete's sake?

Oh, and I almost forgot...I'm obliged to throw out the words "angst" and "emo". As we all know, these are the obligatory derisive terms for characters that have internal conflict. As everyone's aware, truly interesting characters are flawless and self-actualized.

Excuse me while I go download Huey Lewis's "Hip to Be Square" from Itunes....

While I am looking forward to the Dhampyr article, I would absolutely love Playing Myconids. Make it so, WotC!

Honestly, my favorite thing about the article is that they're covering a race which doesn't already have a race writeup in the Monster Manual.
