Dragon Age 4 - now The Veilguard

Huh. Not a fan of the trailer. It’s not what I expected it to look like. Hopefully that’s just the trailer’s art style. And the trailer basically says nothing. The character summaries are too short and vague to be interesting or informative and that’s all the trailer was about.

The trailer looked like it was mostly "in-engine" footage, so I expect the game will look more or less the same way. I guess they're trying to appeal to the Fortnite crowd.

To be fair, Dragon Age has always had a bit of a strange stylized look to it, and this looks like an improved version of inquisition. I have a soft spot for the way the games look but I know it isn’t the prettiest game out there.

One of the developers hinted that the game might not look like this.

I dunno. I liked the way DAI looked. This looks pretty different to me.

OK. I'll wait and see. Varric and Harding looked good, but some of those companions and the undead creatures looked a bit too cartoonish for my taste.

Since we'll be going to Tevinter, I hope that Dorian will show up, even if we don't get to have him as a companion again.

There's going to be an article in the Game Informer Magazine. I don't subscribe so can't read the article, but the preview mentions a shift to "real-time action combat". I usually play my Dragon Age games that way anyway, but it is nice being able to pause when you really need to ... I think I'll miss that.

They also mention Solas ...

The trailer's art style is profoundly messed-up in places - not quite the whole thing - but certain elements of it. It's just barely possible that the same models with completely different lighting might look okay, but in the then-and-there, it absolutely is right to compare it to Fortnite and Overwatch, and remember that Overwatch basically aspired to be Pixar-esque.

And that is so completely the wrong look for Dragon Age. Did they forget DAO/DA2/DAI? They were dark fantasy with some significantly stylization, but vaguely realistic characters, and a pretty edgy tone. The DA4 trailer starts that way, but then loses it halfway through, when it just gets too cute.

Everything else about the trailer is explicable as "Dragon Age trailer" - DAO and DAI both had incredibly messed-up trailers (I'm still sad we didn't get the button-nose short-hair Morrigan of the DAO trailer though). Like, putting a rock or pop tune over stupid action? That's 100% what DAO and DAI's trailers looked like.

I'm actually most mad that they seem to have shaved Varric's chest - you might as well shave ZZ Top, that's just awful. Why do that? EDIT - A rewatch shows maybe I can see a little chest hair, let's pray it's still there and that's not just a shadow.
