Dragon Compendium Table of Contents

I was just doing that myself, Boz. Problem is, while there are a lot of new spells, most of them are...

And I trust any of the old writers who might happen to peruse this board will forgive me...

Bad.

And many of the ones that aren't bad actually exist in 3.5, in new form. Pacify, for instance, is easily replaced with calm emotions.

I agree with you, however, that it may be possible to do something with it. (Starts pondering...)

(Aside: I think that the assassin is a terrible prestige class because it encourages the prc as bundle of special abilities mentality. I have a theory that if the ninja class had kept all its mechancis but been named the assassin, a lot more people would be using it. At the very least, there wouldn't be a knee jerk "Ninjas in Greyhawk?!?!" reaction, something I'm definitely guilty of.)

I agree totally. This is why I use your Assassin base class from Cityworks. No magic needed, and it is great!

No Minarian Legends?!?

Just kidding. Minarian Legends was basically fluff. But, it'd be great to see stuff like that re-released in some form.

Personally, I'd have loved to see stuff that they couldn't have used, due to copyright issues. Specifically, the Kzinti article of issue 50, and pretty much any of the literary characters of Giants in the Earth (though many of them were from public domain sources).

Wow. I guess I'll just have to voice my disagreement. I look at this and am not seeing much to be disappointed with. I'd even go so far as to say this looks like one of the most useful official products on the schedule. I am pleased that a few of the articles I listed as my faves -- like toxins of cerrelon -- made the cut. Are there things I would have like to have seen make it? Yeah. But there's a lot of stuff in there.

* It's already in 3.x in some form. The alternate paladins article falls into this category. Dragon ran a 3.5 article on alternate paladins, and there are also alternate paladins in Unearthed Arcana.

This disappoints me, as I consider both of those quite a bit less flavorful than the original Plethora of Paladins article. But I can understand why it might be seen as redundant.

* The article simply didn't make sense in 3.x. The witch and the archer fall into this category. Both of those classes had core, class-defining abilities that are defined by feats in the PH. The witch can make magic items. The archer had the equivalent of Point Blank Shot and a few other feats.

This I applaud, but it makes me wish you were on the team when CW was being written, as these are the exact reasons that the CW samurai did not deserve to see the light of day.

Probably - it certainly doesn't spring to mind with all the rosy glow that seems to be associated with it here.

What made it so special?

IMO, nothing, really. It was written in an era in which it was okay to make a class overpowered if you labeled it "for NPCs only". So it got lots of abilities beyond a wizards and lots of spells aimed and seduction. Yes, you could update this to 3e by scaling its power back so it matches its level, but I tend to agree the end result would look a lot like an enchantment specialist with item creation feats.

Sir, I accept your challenge!

Rants solely based on a Table of Contents says something about a persons character. I remember a phrase from my youth, "Don't judge a book by its cover." I'm going to expand it, "Don't judge a book based on its cover and/or Table Of Contents" I don't care who you are, odds are there is something in there for everyone. I am a subscriber, and despit having all 3.0/3.5 issues to date, Paizo can count on me to be buying this.

So, what issues were the Sheen and Sunset World articles in, and are they in the CD?

The Sunset World articles were in #150, so that's on the CD. Nearly all of the monsters from the "Dragon's Bestiary" in that issue were updated to 3.5E in Lords of Madness, so there's no rules conversion needed once you have that book.

The Sheens were #257 or #258, I believe, so they're just beyond the CD's cutoff point.
