Dragon Disciple...WHY?

Corlon

First Post
after looking at dragon disciple, it looks like a half dragon that requires and ECL of +10 instead of +3, and there are only a few reasons that I see for taking this class
1. You DM won't let you be a half dragon and you REALLY want to be one.
2. It gives you a size enlargement, giving you wings, which is pretty cool.
3. It gives you bonus spells, which don't compare to 7 sorcerer (or bard) levels.

A lot of people like this class, so I think I've missed something... can someone tell me what?

Well, depending on how one runs it, size advancement might also give you some incredible bonuses. But the real reason is it's about becomeing something more then you were. Being a half dragon template is something you are born with, the Dragon Disiple is something you earn and aspire to be.

I plan to take this class for my sorcerer, but not until epic levels. The epic progression for a single-class Sor is neither interesting nor impressive, and the DD is a way to change that.

There are other PrCs that may give more game benefit, but none of them are as cool as a ten-foot-tall flying firebreathing mage. ;)

(Oh, and this campaign started at first level, so we couldn't take templates at character creation.)

Are you really trying to argue that the entry requirements for a Prestige Class is the same thing as ECL?
No, he means it takes 10 levels to get the full benefit of the PrC.

If you're a 20th-level character who started with the half-dragon template for +4 ECL, you could be a Sor16. But if you went through Dragon Disciple, you'd be a Sor10.

Why would you want to be a high level sorcerer ?

Start the PrC with sor1/clr7 and get all those divine powers, later take 2 more clr levels and add lvl 5 bonus spells ;)

Taking the halfdragon template has never seemed worth it to me, being 4 lvl's behind in HP/feats/skills. With this PrC you can be a halfdragon AND have a lot of cool bonus stuff to go alongside it.

To be a really big strong, butt kicking monster. This and the baldesinger really should of been in sword and fist, they are both fighter prestige classes with a bit of magic flavor.

Basically if I'm going for this prestige class I look for ways to maximize my str, start as 1/2 orc, take barbarian, and frenzied berserker if you know any other str boositng prestige classes take those as well. So you end up with a decent BAB, fairly good HP, and an absurd str with which to crush your foes.(think about taking spiked chain so when large you have an absurd reach. And since you can fly, you never have to close with ground bound foes, also your threatened areas just allow you to control a huge area of the battlefield)

Oh and just the randon destruction you can cause with a 50+str and destructive rage(pre-req for frenzied berserker) is lots of fun, and your lifting capacity is kinda cool as well.

I've got a half-dragon (blue) in my campaign. His father was a dragon, and the PC vows to find his evil father and put an end to his tyranny. He's a lawful-good fighter, and while he's not as gruesome as most half-dragons (he basically looks like a big gruff elf with blue hair), he still feels insecure and is proof that lawful good does NOT have to mean "lawful nice". He doesn't want to get close to anyone, for fear of getting them hurt.

EDIT : oh yeah, the point of this reply. Whether by PrC or template, a character is a character... and it's not the stats and sheer power it has, it's what the character is all about that matters, not a set of numbers.
