Dragon magic question

If you took the level 2 utility feat quick fingers, you could put down a dung beetle in an adjacent square as a free action before you do the attack - he'd be nice and easy to hit, and your power would trigger off!

Mind you, then your DM would beat you to death with the PHB, so it might not be worth it ^^;;

Speaking as someone who was there, a lot of the problem was that it was unclear (two - two split in the group) whether the Dragon Magic powers were an indented part of the hit block, or a separate effect line.

Lots of sorceror powers are written as

Hit Do damage and whatever
Dragon Magic xyz happens

Two people thought the Dragon Magic part only kicked off on a hit. Two thought it was an effect that happened on a hit or miss. The word effect did not appear in the text block of the relevant powers.

Indentation is what is important here. Dragon Magic is indented under the hit so that means that it only comes into effect if you hit.

PHB2 218 said:
Indentation: When information is indented in
a power description, that means the information is
contingent on the information directly above it.

As the layout (ibcluding indenting) is identical to how a lot of the Warlock abilities are effected by Pact choice I would think that the effect only works assuming a Hit occurs.
The Rogue ability Rogue's Luck has an effect due to being an Artful Dodger that is to be done regardless (as it effects the roll of a secondary attack) so it is idented with the Secondary Attack info but not under, and indented from, the Hit line.

So I guess: Idented from the Hit info = only applies assuming at least one hit, regardless of number of targets.

As for description:
A small amount of life force stolen from the target(s) by this power when it hits is captured by you and channels to you as a shield of living fire, that is discharged at the first person to strike you. However this energy is unstable and will only last a short while even if not discharged. = If you hit you have a small amount of power to lash out with - but if you missed everyone no life force was obtained to power the effect. And you can only hold so much of the stolen power so multiple hits don't help increase the effect.

No, because Bag of Rats.

This kind of tomfoolery is explicitly called out in the DMG.

Of course, the followup question is how much damage you do if you hit multiple targets with this.

This'll stack with itself, right? So if you hit three targets, the next enemy that hits you will be eating 3xStr Mod (or 3xstr mod -3x fire resistance if they have resist)

Um, no. It's not "per creature hit." It's just an additional effect if the power hits at all.

Doesn't change whether you hit one target or seven.
