I think its all part of a 4e conspiracy :)

You joke, but that also may be part of it. If WotC has decided to release Dragonlance under 4E, they may be declining all manuscripts so that they can present a coherent setting. As we've heard with FR, it seems that they are certainly not afraid of making changes big and small to a setting. That would also explain the final FR book being cancelled as well.

Do I think it's respectful? Not particularly. Do I think it's fair? I don't really think there is a fair involved here. However, I can certainly see both sides of the issue.

It may be that they were always 3-6 months late and now they were 9-12 months late or something, and that was that.

Margaret's book, Amber and Blood, was about a year late and it's in print.

I'm 33 years old and I recently just read my first Dragonlance book (Dragons of Autumn Twilight). Do these books get any better than this? I don't read a huge amount of fantasy literature, so I don't really have a baseline I guess. I have read LOTR and some of George Martin's work. These books are fabulous. Dragons of Autumn Twilight isn't even close to these in terms of quality. I don't want to say that it is a bad book, but it's pretty close. It really isn't good. My question is, do these books get any better than this? If not, I have no interest in spending any more time reading these. Is Dragons of Autumn Twilight typical or is it of lower quality than the others?

If you expect anything in the quality of martin (or Tolkien) than don´t bother with the DL novels. you are gonna be disappointed. i think DL are great for YA but i don´t think they can hold a candle to books in the vein of martins.

I actually found DoAT to be the best of the first trilogy. I haven't read a DL book that was half as good as that one. And I think you liked DoAT more than me....

The series improves massively after the first book.

The first book was written after and was based upon gaming sessions. To quote Tracy, "you can almost hear the dice clattering on the table when reading it".

All subsequent books in the series ignore the game sessions. The writing improves greatly as a result.

Please appreciate DoAT was essentially the first official "AD&D" work of fiction. It holds a special place in the minds of many for that reason.

That may be - but that doesn't make it okay. And the fact that the company worked with it in the past does not morally obligate them to do so now.

It does, in a way still. Its like having someone else write the Drizzt books other than Salvatore(and I really hate that dark elf now).

Wies and Hickman made Dragonlance what it is, and have a good pulse on the world. Plus the bad publicity that goes with WOTC saying it will not be published. Even with the fact or idea that their late on the manuscript, I still say its not in any of WOTC's best interest to cancel them and act as they have.WOTC has enough bad press to contend with.

You want my take?

This is all just a negotiating ploy. I'd bet dollars to donuts that this book will be released and the authors will be Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

The conversation goes something more or less not like this:

MW & TH: Wow, it's wonderful that our Dragonlance books are so successful for you, Could you maybe throw us a little extra cash?

WotC: What you done for us lately? Where's our manuscript?

MW & TH: We don't actually have it done yet, but it's coming, and how about the extra money I asked about?

WotC: Sorry, it's not in the budget.

MW & TH: But you can roll this over into next year's budget since we're so late with it and pay us double.

WotC: No

MW&TH: Please

WotC: No. Please stop asking now.

MW & TH: Please

WotC: OK, we can get someone else to write this thing.

MW & TH: <expletive deleted> Hey look, let's be reasonable. We'll finish the book. Deal?

WotC: No seriously, it's cool.

MW & TH: Very well, you leave us no choice. <tells fans the bad news>

WotC: Oh crap, bad press. Hey MW & TH, how about we get you that bonus you were asking for and you give us the manuscript.

MW&TH: OK

Heh, that almost happened you know. I don't remember the details, but for whatever reason Salvatore was done with Drizzt and WotC. WotC hired another writer to create a new Drizzt story. This other writer completed the novel, it was advertised for release, then all of a sudden Bob came back to WotC and the new Drizzt novel disappeared into the ether. Did they offer Salvatore more money? Did Salvatore freak when he discovered someone else was writing stories for his character? I don't know, and we'll probably never find out. And while I do like Salvatore's writing and all of his Drizzt books, I do think it's a shame this other writer's completed manuscript will never see the light of day.

It was actually TSR that had the other author write the book. WotC killed that book and brought Salvatore back when they acquired TSR. I remember specifically planning to not buy the book by the other author and I was quite happy when Salvatore came back.
