Wasn't Huma a Paladin?...

Purely for my nerdy AD&D days, Huma was not a paladin as we know it. First, Dragonlance didn't have Paladins (the closest thing was a Knight of the Sword, who could get clerical powers), and second, he was in the lowest tier of the Knights, a Crown knight with no special abilities.

In the novel with his name, that was the beauty of his legend. He was an ordinary soldier with doubts, not the greatest fighter, but possessed of an inner core of good that led him to be able to pass tests of the Gods and face down the Queen of Darkness without succumbing to her repertoire of lies, fear, and temptation.
