I think it was an attempt to mimic the effect of dragon breath weapons, which in the early days did damage equal to the dragon's current hit points (save for half).

That and the Lance's used while charging on a dragon would one shot them.

3d6+str X2 plus Rider and mounts hp = dead dragon. A level 7 or 8 fighter on an adult dragon could probably kill a great wrym in 1 hit.

I'm thinking of adding Dragonlances to my game to help kill an adult blue dragon (with help) level 7 or 8.

Just wondering how you would stat one up.

S basic version would be a 3.5 bane weapon. This is an extra 2d6 damage and the weapon increases our so a +1 Lance becomes +3.

Or I can convert the AD&D ones more or less as is. Maybe auto crits on Dragons idk.

There's also a feat in my game that lets you craft weapons and armor out of dragon parts. It grants an extra 1d6 damage and resistance to the appropriate element.

Thoughts on the Lance's and feat?

Some where +5, you could not do this for 5e obviously, but +3 is fair game, so maybe +1 and +3 vs Dragons is a good start.
In 1e/2e they used the wielders HP for damage vs dragon if I can remember correctly, 5e has a different HP economy so you also cannot use that. Also quite deadly effects of other editions get watered down I n5e e.g. finger of death spell. So rather do this 1d12+1+Strmod versus normal and (1d12+3+Strmod) x 5 versus dragons.
Since the hero wielding one would be high level eventually he might have maxed Str to 20 for +5
The vs dragon it would be (9-20)x5 for 45 to 100 damage, and that totally feels about right and how I would do that.

I'm thinking Dragonslayer sword in Lance and spear form.

Buffed one would be +3 and + 6d6 I think and maybe expanded crit range 18-20 or effect similar to vorpal but impalement instead.

Yep the scaling on those two items should be similar, still a dragonlance is a major artifact as I see it, so maybe make the sword x3 and the lance x5?

You got to find a compromise between the 1e/2e 1shot a dragon power of the lance and 5e BA. but one major aspect must not get forgotten: you can control the breath weapon of the dragon you are riding as a bonus action if you got a dragonlance.

The initial Dragonlance was so powerful maybe because it has to simulate the single charge of a single knight against a Dragon in a one to one combat resembling the heroic situation of a tournament. It is an aesthetic choice functional to the narrative aspects of the novels. If you downsize the power of the lance it would be crazy to fight with it against a Dragon. Tournament Lance is a typical "one shot" weapon that MUST be deadly in the single attack you have. My suggestion is to abandon the idea of a tournament lance if you want make it less powerful and shift to a multi-attack no tournament style type of weapon as a greatsword.
Excuse my english.
Ciao
