FireLance
Legend
I think it was an attempt to mimic the effect of dragon breath weapons, which in the early days did damage equal to the dragon's current hit points (save for half).That’s...an incredibly weird mechanic.

I'm thinking of adding Dragonlances to my game to help kill an adult blue dragon (with help) level 7 or 8.
Just wondering how you would stat one up.
S basic version would be a 3.5 bane weapon. This is an extra 2d6 damage and the weapon increases our so a +1 Lance becomes +3.
Or I can convert the AD&D ones more or less as is. Maybe auto crits on Dragons idk.
There's also a feat in my game that lets you craft weapons and armor out of dragon parts. It grants an extra 1d6 damage and resistance to the appropriate element.
Thoughts on the Lance's and feat?
Some where +5, you could not do this for 5e obviously, but +3 is fair game, so maybe +1 and +3 vs Dragons is a good start.
In 1e/2e they used the wielders HP for damage vs dragon if I can remember correctly, 5e has a different HP economy so you also cannot use that. Also quite deadly effects of other editions get watered down I n5e e.g. finger of death spell. So rather do this 1d12+1+Strmod versus normal and (1d12+3+Strmod) x 5 versus dragons.
Since the hero wielding one would be high level eventually he might have maxed Str to 20 for +5
The vs dragon it would be (9-20)x5 for 45 to 100 damage, and that totally feels about right and how I would do that.
I'm thinking Dragonslayer sword in Lance and spear form.
Buffed one would be +3 and + 6d6 I think and maybe expanded crit range 18-20 or effect similar to vorpal but impalement instead.
Maybe auto crits on Dragons idk.
Well, you don't have to give them a save - power word kill doesn't after all.Power word kill on a crit?
Dragons have good saves and legendary resistance so a save isn't so great IMHO.
Oh, that makes sense then.I think it was an attempt to mimic the effect of dragon breath weapons, which in the early days did damage equal to the dragon's current hit points (save for half).
