Draw Steel General Thread [+]

My character died last night, the first time it's happened to me in Draw Steel. When it happened I was very frustrated with the system, because it largely came from another playing wanting to take their turn and then not doing anything because of conditions and positioning. But after I thought about it I realized at least it was because of a decision the group made, and I could look back and find the specific decision that lead to it, where as in d20 it would have been completely up to the dice.

Impressive, considering all that must occur for a character to die:

  • Hit 0 Stamina and continue to do Main Actions / Triggered Actions / make Might/Agil tests despite this, triggering the Bleed effect.
  • Have nobody come around and use Heal on them, or any of the various other abilities which allow the Dying character to Recover (or be entirely out of Recoveries).
  • Through Bleed or additional damage, reach negative Stam = Winded.

So like, lots of decision space prior to that final state.

Matt Colville ran at least some of "The Fall of Blackbottom" for Zee and his group iirc.

Dang it would be fun to have Matt run Draw Steel for you.

That was a fun little video that did a good job of explaining the Draw Steel gameplay loop to people.

Honestly I hope to see more stuff like that video. I’m really enjoying Draw Steel but it feels like MCDM isn’t really promoting it that much outside of their core base. Maybe part of that was them wanting to see if Crack the Sun would be a success and people wanted more Draw Steel before pushing it. I do think they’re also hoping for more word of mouth to help spread the game.

I know Matt has said on stream that Draw Steel is sell well and selling hundreds of copies a day which is probably a pretty big success in the TTRPG space outside of DnD but at times it feels like the Draw Steel hype is weirdly muted. I don’t know if I can properly describe it and I just may be crazy.
