Drider question

Just a question about driders. In the MM it says that driders cast spells as 6 level wizrds, clerics, or sorcerers. If I decide to give a drider a level in the above 3 classes how would you handle spells? Would you give them 1st level spells, or would you give them spells as a 7th level wiz, clr or sor? BTW I have actually been using the drider template from the Wotc website for driders that are more powerful than the MM ones

I think that if you give a Drider a class level in the class who's casting ability you chose to give the Drider (since Drider only cast spell as of of the classes) the Driders casting ability will be equal to the Drider's racial casting ability (6) plus the Drider's class level. So if a Drider has the racial casting ability of a Wizard and gains one level of Wizard I believe that that Drider will have the casting ability of a seventh level Wizard. However if the Drider has the racial casting ability of a Wizard and gains one level of Cleric or Sorcerer then that Drider will have the casting ability of a sixth level Wizard and a first level Cleric or Sorcerer.

Yep. There is even an example in the back of the MM 3.5 (under advancing by class levels maybe...associated and nonassociated class levels, IIRC) that uses a Rakshasa as an example of what happens when you add class levels to a monster with the ability to replicate spells.
