Drinking potion = AoO???

Does drinking a potion equal an AoO?

It only makes sense that it does, but I can not find it written anywhere. It is not in the list on the DM screen, or the PHB.

How did it not come up during play testing, healing potions and combat go hand and hand?

I'm pretty sure it does, and I thought it was on the DM Screen list, but I can't find mine (I switched to the Hackmaster GM Screen- the greatest advance in dming technology in over 25 years). So I wouldn't guarantee that I'm right.

Drinking a potion does provoke an attack of opportunity. DMG page 190 talks about potions. Bottom right of the page, second bullet, first sentence, "Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity."

It can suck if you get popped while trying to drink the potion. You have to make a Concentration check (as with casting a spell), and if you fail the check, you fail to drink the potion.

My only question, however, is in regards to the DC of the Concentration check. Is it 10 + spell level of the spell stored in the potion? Or is it 10 + caster level of the potion? I've been running it as the former.

PHB Pg 126, supernatural abilities can be used defensively, concentration 15. DC 15 is the default, checking...

DMG Pg 190, potions, drinking a poton is a standard action that provokes an AOO, forces a concentration check as per a spell. No mention of a DC specifically.

The DMG does not say that you can drink defensively but I would think so and I would say DC 15.

Sorry, no conclusive official ruling that I saw. That said my ruling satisfies me.:p

Well, except for the "as for a spell" part. Spells are 10 + damage + spell level. Of course, this means that potions of cure serious wounds are somehow harder to drink than potions of cure light wounds, but there you have the "official word".

Personally
If the player decides to drink a potion outside of any threatened area, it's just a standard action.

When a player decides to drink inside a threatened area, there is an AOO. The player can always take a 5 foot step before drinking (unless ofcourse the reach still hits him).

Concentration check would be 10 +damage dealt + spell level for a potion?????? Well if it's in the books, fine. A cure moderate wounds potion is harder to drink that cure light. Must be the molasses.

A person casting a spell would have to make a concentration check to not miscast the spell and loose it, so if a person drinking a potion fails the concentration check, the potion is lost. IE drops and breaks.

Uhm...that's the way it already is.

Are you agreeing or trying to suggest an alternate method?
