FROM AN EARLIER POST
I will use an example of an already created 5th level elven wizard (I’ve already proven myself with a character created above 1st level, citing appropriate rulings in the DMG).
My particular wizard happens to have exactly 14,999xp, just one xp shy of making 6th level. The party has stopped in a sizable city with a fair amount of recources. This wizard has about 1,000gp in standard equipment and minor magic items, plus 8,000gp for a total of 9,000gp, which matches exactly Table 5-1: Character Wealth by Level.
So………this wizard has 4,999xp and 8,000gp to spend Crafting Wondrous Items, one of his Feats. While in town, he plans on making Boots of Elvenkind, actually more than one pair, actually as many pairs as he can, because he can (see Character Created Magic Items DMG p.43 top left).
This wizard decides to spend 7,000gp of his 8,000gp to make as many boots as he can, which is 7 pair.
Boots of Elvenkind (market value 2000gp) x 7 pair = 14,000gp
Nothing in the DMG sais I can’t do this, so I have to assume I can do this. IF I COULD NOT DO THIS, IT WOULD SAY SO.
Now I have 7 pair of Boots of Elvenkind valued at 14,000gp + 1,000gp of gear originally + 1,000gp left =
16,000gp
