I think people are thinking about this wrong. It's not that when you make up a 10th level character, your character is handed 49,000gp to go shopping with. It's that when you add up the base price for all your characters items they total 49k or less. It doesn't matter if that item was personally made or found in a dungeon. All that matters is the base price.

That's what I've been tryin' to tell them. *shrug* Oh well. It's all good. I know I'm right anyways. :D

You always "know" your right even when your wrong. :D

kreynolds' premise on this though was that a PC could not make magic items that would put him or her over the limit of Character Wealth by Level.

If you are sticking to the limit of character wealth, then you must stay under that limit. It would not matter if it was a purchased magic item or found or made.

Let's say that you allow a magical item personal made by a wizard to count as half because he would spend only have the actualy cost to make it. Then why couldn't another character claim that one of his magical items was the gift of the King who he personally saved (and it's written up beautifully in his history). So, since it was a gift it would count as nothing towards his maximium wealth.

These is for starting characters out at a certain level. If ou are talking about not allowing a PC in game to make a certain item because you demand that they stay under this limit at all times is a completely different topic.

that was the topic

FROM AN EARLIER POST

I will use an example of an already created 5th level elven wizard (I’ve already proven myself with a character created above 1st level, citing appropriate rulings in the DMG).

My particular wizard happens to have exactly 14,999xp, just one xp shy of making 6th level. The party has stopped in a sizable city with a fair amount of recources. This wizard has about 1,000gp in standard equipment and minor magic items, plus 8,000gp for a total of 9,000gp, which matches exactly Table 5-1: Character Wealth by Level.
So………this wizard has 4,999xp and 8,000gp to spend Crafting Wondrous Items, one of his Feats. While in town, he plans on making Boots of Elvenkind, actually more than one pair, actually as many pairs as he can, because he can (see Character Created Magic Items DMG p.43 top left).
This wizard decides to spend 7,000gp of his 8,000gp to make as many boots as he can, which is 7 pair.

Boots of Elvenkind (market value 2000gp) x 7 pair = 14,000gp

Nothing in the DMG sais I can’t do this, so I have to assume I can do this. IF I COULD NOT DO THIS, IT WOULD SAY SO.

Now I have 7 pair of Boots of Elvenkind valued at 14,000gp + 1,000gp of gear originally + 1,000gp left =

16,000gp

Which was the topic? Sorry but I list two topics and I'm not sure what you are saying is the topic. Is it:

a) Starting characters at x level and implementing the starting equipment rule

B) playing characters to a certain level and forcing the starting equipment on them

Sorry about my confusion.

Well, I try to pull threads from the rediculus.

Let me see if I understand this. As you gain levels, you still have to keep under the Starting equipment numbers? That doesn't seem right since you are not starting at that level. Also, assuming you are making the boots for other party members or other people, I would have to say that it would count against their total and not yours once you gave it to them.

Now, if you are starting at a certain level and are trying to get around the starting equipment limit by saying you made the items, I would have a problem with that.
