Druid Help Please

No - you don't need ANY ranks in wilderness lore to help tracking (if allowed). All you have to do is "take 10" when helping - auto success vs. DC 10.

Unless I've overlooked something (which is all too often the case right after I make that statement).

You have overlooked something. You CANNOT take 10 on cooperative checks.

We have a Elven Druid who has taken the bow route. Weapon focus, rapid shot, percise shot etc. with a strength bow +1. He uses his spells to heal and support the party. He tends to stay at the back supporting the Ranger and Paladin who are in the front lines, the mage is usually flying about somewhere.

He also Enlightened a few animals though they all died except the osprey, who now acts as a scout for them, esp when the mage casts invisibility on him.

And Darklone, thanks for the plug. :D

Hey, I owe it to you to have rediscovered the druid :D

Speaks took Dodge, Mobility and used a longspear... Spring Attack would have made him interesting in melee, especially in underbrush. He took Brew Potion instead (made sense then).

As for the animal companions, whoever said don't waste them on birds...

My villains lost more than one familiar to birds :D

And the recon abilities are horrible useful. Round the clock air reconnaissance for just one or two HD.

If you wanna go gnome, think about the forest gnome, I think they got speak with animals instead of the usual gnome cantrips?

I still vote for some dex. You can't rely on wildshape the whole day. Ah, is Produce Flame a druid spell? I think so. Must be very nice to use it as bird :D

Actually, you could have 2 18s and 4 13's.

You have 40. Take twenty, break them into 4 5's. Add 5 to each 8.

That leaves 20. Break it into ten, and add those to the remaining 2 8's. That gives you 18.
He is referring to the point buy system in the DMG on pages 19-20, not a point-for-point system.

Thanks for the suggestions. We played last nite.

Was quite a change playing a character who could not effectively enter melee (although I was forced to a few times). Everything in our campaign seems to come down to melee, and, rather than see me (out of spells) stand back and let me wolf fight, they expected me to get in toe to toe with Orcs wielding Greataxes, which I did (with lucky die rolling). Hope they wont be expecting that all the time, cuz it wont happen.

I think it will be fine, once I advance a bit. Having more spells, and solving problems without force, will be a change in mindset for many, i'm sure.

Don't forget about that sling. :D

Just be careful. The distance between the fighting classes and spell casters in melee combat becomes bigger as you advance levels.

In one of our games, im trying to get the DM to let me change characters to a druid. This will really help out our monk (can anyone say...Magic Fang?). On top of that, we dont have a cleric, so i would be the only healer we have. The other players like the idea, im just waiting for the DM to say ok. Druids seem to be a pretty good class, especially with animal companions (i want a wolf, and maybe an eagle...) Now what would be good spell choices for 1st and 2nd level spells? besides Magic Fang (going to have at least 1 of them memorized, 2 when i can. 1 for monk, 1 for wolf)
