Yes they can. The rule is your animal companion can equal 2 times your caster level in HD, unless you use MOTW, that only allows one HD per caster level. Either way you're fine.

I perfer using the 2HD per caster level.

No, it's 2HD per caster level if you're not an adventuring druid, but if you are an adventuring druid, you don't have the resources to take care of that many HD of animal companions, so the limit is 1HD.

BTW The animal lord PrC in MotW allows you to have 2 HD per AL level. Catch is, that it has to be of the type of critter you are lord of.

The rules in MotW are the same as those given in the DMG. You can have up to twice your caster level in HD of companions. However, if you adventure, you can only expect to keep half that amount. In any case, no single companion can have more HD than the player. In other words, a second level druid could have two 2HD animals, so long as he doesnt go adventuring, but he could not have a 4HD animal even if all he does is stay home and take care of it.

The thing that stumps me is that a wolf (2 HD) is considered to be a good selection for a first level druid--it is even suggested in MotW--even though it would be a violation of the rules. Can anyone figure that out?

yeah, in the players handbook under the druid description, 1st level is the only level druids are allowed to have a companion with more hit dice than themselves, up to twice thier HD i beleive.
