Drunken Dwarf Defender

The dwarven pregens were the front line in the goblin tunnels last night (as is right and proper). In the first encounter, after slaying some 15 goblins, they stood shoulder to shoulder in the hallway against the ogre.

Cleric of Moradin uses Dodge Action (AC jumps to 22)
Ogre attacks (and misses)
Fighter attacks ogre (and hits)
Cleric of Moradin uses Dodge again
Ogre attacks Fighter (since he attacked and the cleric is just standing there)
Cleric uses Defender feat imposing Disadvantage on ogre's attack (ogre misses)

Rinse, repeat, but not for too much longer, because between the Fighter's damage and the ranged support from behind, the ogre was not long for this world.

Then the Cleric of Moradin got drunk on pilfered goblin ale.

They repeated the tactic at the door of the goblin chieftain's chamber, only now the Cleric of Moradin has DR 1d6.

It didn't save them from the orc hordes, but against small and/or solo encounter situations, it was Super Effective.

Maybe I'm adding too much biology to this, but how can the Dwarf get drunk?

Liquor is a poision. Thats why it affects us the way it does. As such isnt the Dwarf immune?

A wild Ogre appears!
Dwarf cleric of Moradin! I choose you!
Dwarf cleric of Moradin uses Beer!
It's super-effective!

I have absolutely no problem with this. Encouraging dwarves to drink up before a fight? That's flavorful mechanics if I've ever heard them.

And flavorful beverages.

That was my initial reaction as well, I mean, it's called intoxication after all (:

However, my interpretation of the rule is that dwarves can get drunk, they just can't die from drinking. They can drink themselves into oblivion - maybe even with the off-chance that there might be a large enough alcohol supply at hand they might pass out - to pass out (unlikely) - they still won't be able to die from drinking.

That's my "just for fun" interpretation until the "intoxicated" and "Dwarven poison immunity" changes... which I'm sure they will.

I finally found the point where I would throw up my hands and proclaim that "This is not D&D To ME!" Any edition which wouldn't allow dwarves to get drunk is dead to me.

:D:p;)

oh no, they get drunk, it just doesn't kill them. ;)

A dwarf shall not drink!

However, if he should drink he shall not get drunk!

If he should get drunk, he shall not stagger!

And if he should stagger, he shall not fall.

And if he should fall, he shall fall face-down to cover up his beard, so that passers-by will mistake him for a gnome!
