Drunken Master Rage:How Often?

rec1966

First Post
I am playing a 6/5 Monk/Drunken Master and need to know how often I should be able to use the Drunken Rage ability. Is it: a) 1/per day, b) 2/day as a 5th level barbarian, c)unlimited, but only when alcohol has been imbibed, or d)unlimited, no alcohol needed?

I think it is answer c) {or at least that's how my DM ran it and how I interpret it to}. The act of you drinking and having the alcohol activate your Ki is what Drunken rage is.

Remeber it isn't necessarily as cool as barbarian rage cuz you need to spend a move eq action (or combined with a move action ala drawing a weapon) to pull your wineskin/bottle/hip flask and then a standard action to drink it (which provokes an AoO just like a potion). Barb-rage is a free action.

I was thinking on trying to trying to create a 'Quick Drinker' or 'Chug' feat (makes drinking [including a potion] a move action or combined with a move ala Legend of Drunken Master w/ Jackie Chan for the first feat ; Chug lets you consume twice as much therefore you get sorta twice the drunken rage duration).

That's my 10 cents - my 2 cents are free.

It tend to agree with you, but my DM is saying since it does say anything, the default answer is 1/day. BTW, as part of the Drink like a Demon ability, you can chug a brew as a move eq. action.

I agree, the ability seems poorly written.

I would not make it 1/day. I would instead make it cost 1 "Drink"-equivalent to initiate, and then make the character wait until after the exhaustion period ENDS, before being able to initiate a new Rage (which would also cost 1 "drink"-equivalent). The alcohol spent to initiate the Rage would still count for duration (1 round worth). Multiple rages could not stack benefits, of course.

That however is fair. Consider, since the Drunken Rage supercedes Drink like a Demon's benefits ... some of those benefits include the preserved AC and Saving Throw levels. So, your AC and saves would worsen based on the number of drinks still in the character's system, and the resultant lowered Dexterity, Intelligence, and Wisdom; this might make your DM less wary of that ability.

Even making it just once per ENCOUNTER would be better, IMO, especially given the added loss of AC/Saves mentioned above.

You are correct on the chug = move eq action.

A lot of people don't like Drunken Masters cuz (in real life) they aren't supposed to be like Jackie Chan and get drunk and become invincible warriors who can take punishment and get all limber and stuff...

However, the spirit of the Drunken Master is to be like Jackie Chan - and that's how I see it.

I think you should be able to do it as often as desired, but impose both the fatigued penalties as well as a 'being drunk' penalty too. Can't remember if the BoVD has alcohol in it...have to check.

I'd also role-play the character's stigma for being a louse and a drunk and an outcast monk...to help offset the apparent abilities of being a Drunken Master.

Hope both my posts help.

That is the way my character is being played. I am continually looked down on by others(including my new party, esp. the Paladin). I am having to deal with the DlaD downsides. But I am not getting to rage more than 1/day.

You should at least Rage as often as a Barbarian of your Drunken Master class level. Considering when you even GET the ability, it should be more powerful than a 1/day Barbarian Rage.

Thanks Lovitar for your responses. I'm hoping some more people will give their opinions as well. I agree Pax that it should be more than 1/day, but the question is how much.

You know, I'm sorry, but all other issues aside, the idea that if no limit is stated then "the default answer is 1/day" is utter nonsense. If no limit is given to how often you can use a power, then there's no limit. Whether that's what was intended and what works best is a different matter.
