Dual Implement Spellcaster and Staff Fighting

Falling Icicle

If I recall correctly, Staff Fighting lets one use a staff as a double weapon. Does this allow a character with the Dual Implement Spellcasting feat to get double the enhancement bonus of the staff as long as he is not using anything in his offhand? I was thinking about a wizard using a staff of ruin this way to get 3x the enhancement bonus to damage. Is that legal?

Yep, it's legal.

Note the lack of stat-synergy, though: you need 13 Dex for TWF, 13 Wisdom for Staff Fighting, and you probably want to be a Con-based Staff mage since you won't have a free hand for any other implement.

13 dex is great stat synergy for sorcerers

You also need a 13 Wis for Expand Spell - well worth it.

Also you can't get the 3* bonus any more - Dual Implement is an Item Bonus, as is Staff of Ruin.

Do you even need staff fighting for this?

I'm not sure how to take this RAW, and character builder seems to think you get it (though I know it is no reliable source).

No it's not.

Staff of Ruin

Update (2/8/2010)
Replace the item’s property with the following text: “Whenever you make an attack using this staff, you gain an item bonus to the attack’s damage rolls equal to the staff’s enhancement bonus.” This change prevents this staff’s property from being used with the Dual Implement Spellcaster feat to gain disproportionate damage.

Well, it certainly is something.

People were putting the staff in their off-hand to gain 2*Enh bonus to damage, in addition to their primary.

Of course, they can still just use it in their primary hand and use something else, Subtle Dagger frex, in their off hand. Whee.

Page 56 of the AV says that you need to use the weapon in the attack to gain the property.
