OH

I thought that sounded weird...ummm..it will allow edged weapons to be used as blunt weapons...so one can still use their sword against a water weird or clay golem with full effect...the spell is also useful when fighting skeletal creatures.

I get it now. Thanks. :) I made up a weapon enhancement a while back that did the same thing. I would like to make one suggestion though; I think you can safely extend the duration to 1 minute/level (D), or maybe even 1 hour/level (D). It's not a powerful spell at all, so I don't think an extended duration would hurt.

Very nice work, shivamuffin. I hope you don't mind if I snag it to try out. :D

When I saw the title of this thread, here's what jumped into my mind immediately:

Dull Blade
Transmutation 2
V,S,M
Range: Close
Duration: permanent/1d6+level rounds
Effect: One Weapon
Save: Will negates
SR: yes

This spell may be cast on an opponent's weapon. If the weapon is a nonmagical slashing or piercing weapon, its threat range becomes 20/x2 and all of its base damage dice are reduced by one step. For example, a greatsword goes from 2d6 to 2d4 base damage. This effect is permanent on nonmagical weapons only; when the spell is cast on a magical weapon its effects last for the listed duration.

If used against a magical keen weapon, the effect of this spell is only to remove the keen aspect of the enchantment. If the weapon is magical but not keen, then its threat range becomes 20/x2 and its base damage dice are reduced by one step.

If the character using the weapon has feats such as improved critical, then the new threat range is used rather than the old to determine the effect of the feat. For example, a fighter with the improved critical feat wielding a +1 rapier affected by this spell would deal d4+1 base damage (not counting their Str bonus) and threaten a critical on a 19-20.

I don't mind if it's used, that's what it's for! and the other reply with the modification is cool too! As a DM I try really hard to push my spellcasters to create their own spells...it's the most powerful ability granted to them, above even the creation of magic items in my opinion.

Well, well, well! This thread is just chock full o' magical goodness! Very nice work, fuindordm! :)

Thanks, 'K.

The side effect of doing normal damage against skeletons could be added to this spell, I imagine, with no ill effects. I also thought about making it 3rd level but not allowing a save, but then it seemed kind of underpowered for a 3rd level spell.

Responding to the first Dull Blade spell: How about adding something to the effect that "Upon casting the spell, you can choose, for the duration of the spell, that the weapon deal only subdual damage, without the standard -4 penalty. Once chosen, the effect cannot change during the duration of the spell, though may be dispelled at any time."? Not sure if this bumps the spell up a level, but, personally, I don't think it would be necessary, so long as the duration wasn't 1 day/level or some nonsense. Just my 2 cp.
