Just got in Dungeon #112. Contents this time are really easy:

Editorial on page 5

Swords and Sorcery - in Wargaming By Gary Gygax - A 4-page article that first appeared in Wargames Digest Magazine 30 years ago about this new game called Dungeons & Dragons. My, how things have changed.

Maure Castle an adventure for 4 12th level characters that takes place in the Dutchy of Urnst in Greyhawk. Written by Gary Gygax and Robert J. Kuntz. This module takes up the entire issue, and contains 4 full-page dungeon maps, plus a small inset map showing where in the Dutchy the castle is located. There are also 3 pages of new items, and 10 pages of new monsters for the adventure. The monsters are
Demon, Colchiln
Demon, Kerzit the Guardian
Demon, Nabassu
Hetfish - a tiny magical beast
Maurid - magical beast template
Shoosuva - large undead
Slow Shadow - medium outsider
Tyrg - large magical beast

Downer, a 2-page comic.

There is also a note that Dungeon issues 117-120 will contain a massive 4-part map of the World of Greyhawk.

Arrrggghhh.... Issue #111 only came into Ballarat earlier this week. I've still got another month to go!

Cheers!

IIRC, the module is by Gary Gygax & Rob Kuntz. Many people are big fans of one or both.

Maure Castle is better known as part of a module called "Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure", published years back. It was one of the few places where Mordenkainen ALMOST met his end. Gary said the second level of the published adventure way back when is pure fabrication; he only got through the first level, and (I think) Rob gave him some notes, but I don't think it was ever completely designed.

The appeal of this issue to old-timers like myself is two-fold:

1) Gary's article
2) An updated, 3E version of Maure Castle, with its unique denizens, their little society they live in, and the bizarre creatures, traps, and secrets underneath it.

Finally, that Map is something fans of Greyhawk have been waiting for since the F'n Realms got the map treatment in Dragon back in 2001.

In all, some major goodness to look ahead to.

EDIT: Gary and Rob wrote it?!@?! Oh, snap!

sorry. All the goodness is causing me to revert. :)

I'm looking forward to it, but I am slightly aprehensive. Apart from anythign else, the chances of me ever runnign it are not good. Erik described it as a meat grinder, and it's probably more dungeon crawly than my group likes.

But I'll still pick it up. The old wargaming digest article sounds cool.
