[Dungeon] Dungeon/Polyhedron Goes Monthly

Since we're on the subject of maps, can I make a suggestion? Can the maps go back to being b&w like they were before the advent of D&D 3E? To keep my players on their toes, I like switching the maps between different adventures. To do this , I use to copy them so it's easier to do. With the full color maps, they don't copy as well.

I'll second that one. At LEAST try to have the B&W versions of the maps available to download online. That would be WONDERFUL!

Thanks
Chris

bah, damned if you do damned if you don't....now if they were to allow you to say take an option of having dungeon/X (where X is LGJ, Poly, ModernD20, starwars stuff) i would go for that. Let the customer choose what they want to bundle with their stuff.
That's right, damn if you do, damn if you don't (like I ever needed to use any one of the adventures in Dung ... I'm an RPG veteran for gawd's sake). But unlike you, I'm a lot less crankier than before. As I said, I'm cool with the recent business decision. I know that Dung is useful for those who needed ... help ... in the creative department. ;)

As for your suggestion, that would be a very suicidal business move, unless it is your personal agenda is to shut the company that currently publish Dung. And yes, I say suicidal because that is the same stupid approach that then-TSR did: making too many damn products for so little audiences.

If you're a business major, change it. We don't need another Enron fiasco.

Have a Safe and Happy New Year! :D

while originally i thought this was a great deal i have to agree with one of the above posters: it aint' that great. Why?

For one thing i have to wait every 2 months to get a FULL copy of dungeon AND pay $14 to get it. To me that don't make sense. I don't use poly, don't like poly don't WANT poly but now i am stuck with it. I was all for the idea of spinning it off into a sepearte mag as i wouldn't need poly for anything as all i need is DUNGEON.

It's not as bad (?) for subscribers, to quote Johhny Wilson:
In those months where the Polyhedron emphasis is greater, Dungeon/Polyhedron SUBSCRIBERS will receive a bonus adventure that will not appear in the newsstand books. This will be in addition to the newsstand page count (an extra signature in magazine speak) and will bring to the total number of pages devoted annually to adventures to a higher total than the bi-monthly format. It also rewards our subscribers in a way that makes sense. Newsstand buyers may be able to purchase the bonus adventures from us at a separate price, but they either will be electronic software downloads or separately printed collections of the adventures.

As for Polyjedron, as a news stand purchaser I have bought about as many issues because of Poly as I have Dungeon, about 2 or 3 issues a year total. So all I can do is shrug and move on...

The Auld Grump, gettin' grumpier

I think this is a fair deal. While I absolutely *despise* Polyhedron, I think the new format makes up for it (as a multi-year subscriber - to *Dungeon* - I still get a full Dungeon magazine once every two months like I originally subscribed to, plus I get bonus subscriber Dungeon material).

Yes, you get one old Dungeons worth of stuff every two months.. for twice the price now! Good deal, eh? ;)

And I'm doubly shafted since I can only get newsstand versions here in finland. Not that I'd like to subscribe to anyway, anymore.

(I was referring to the bonus content for subscribers..)

When I got to 3e when it was released, one reason I was so enthusiastic about it was the Dungeon magazine. As I had played smaller games before, it seemed strange to suddenly have adventures in a magazine. Too bad that they're changing it like that. I already had all the non-adventure stuff in dragon. I don't need poly.

Beginning with the May issue of Dungeon/Polyhedron (#98), we will be reducing the cover price from $7.99 to $6.99 and will appear monthly thereafter. All who have subscribed to the magazines prior to January 22, 2003 will have their subscriptions extended by two issues to reflect changes in the frequency and page count of the magazine.

The emphasis in the new circa 100-page Dungeon/Polyhedron will alternate from month-to-month. One month, approximately 2/3 of the magazine will be Dungeon adventures and the other third will be dedicated to previewing exciting d20 System news from Wizards of the Coast and other publishers, RPGA Network updates, new equipment, enemies, maps, and scenarios for the d20 Modern RPG and support for previously published Polyhedron Mini-Games.

Then where do I request my refund, Mr. Wilson?

Some simple math for those who think I'm just ranting. I extended my subcription at GenCon 2002 with an informal promise from Erik Mona that Dungeon would not be altered.

If the magazine continued as a bi-monthly publication, I would receive 23 issues from May 2003 to Oct 2006. The most recent issue had a Dungeon page-count of 116 pages.

21 x 116 = 2,436 pages of Dungeon content purchased.

Now, the new 100-page monthly comes along and I receive 23 issues. Lets say 12 of these issues are the 2/3rds issues (2/3 x 100 = 67) plus an extra adventure. Lets be optimistic and say the extra adventure is an average of ten pages. That's 77 pages for 13 issues.

12 x 77 = 924 pages

Plus, the other eleven issues have only 1/3rd of 100 pages (33 pages).

11 x 33 = 363 pages + 924 pages = 1,287 pages

1,287 divided by 2,436 = 53% of my original value.

Tell me how that's a deal.

P.S. In fact, even if my subscription went completely through the end date under the new plan I would still be shorted content. Only if my subscription extends two issues beyond Oct 2006 would I be getting my value. Please explain that this is the case to all of us and then it will be a good value.

Math

Huh? Umm... I'm no math brain so maybe I'm missing something, here, Kelly. But... if you have a bi-monthly magazine that goes monthly, then wouldn't the increase double rather than just go up by two?

From May 2003 to October 2006, there are 42 months, right? Bi-monthly, that's 21 issues. Monthly, that's 42 issues. 21 x 116 = 2,436 pages. 42 x 100 = 4,200 pages.

I don't see the problem here.

You are missing the key part of Johnny's post:

*emphasis added*

Notice he said ISSUES and not MONTHS. Which leads me to believe my 23 bi-monthly issues will become 25 monthly issues and the amount of Dungeon content I receive will be cut almost in half as shown above. I have asked for clarification of the 2 additional ISSUES vs. MONTHS and hope the answer is as you see it.

i don't care if it's a suicidal business move or not. They wanted opinions and ideas on the matter and that's what i gave them. My OPINION. Now is there a snowballs' chance in hell of that happening? No. but at least i spoke what i wanted to say...

Note: Johnny did write me personally and tell me about this and yes he said that i will be getting a great deal on it all but i still agree that even though we will be getting 125% IF we subscribe of dungeon instead of 100%. I want to see the price for subscribing and then i'll mull it over or not. But kudos goes out to Pazio for writing us 'peons' :)
