Dungeon Magazine Pricing Issue (long, sorry)

My vote is split Poly out into it's own magazine so those of us who find it of no value are not forced to buy it and others who find it useful can spend their money subscribing to it.
Once again, someone cast a resurrection spell on a dead horse ... only to have it beaten up again.

If Poly has that much value it should be able to stand on its own two feet with its own subscription.
The same argument could be said of Dungeon who have experienced low sale prior to the merging of Poly. Some have said that the magazine would not have survived last year (i.e., ended up in the same graveyard as Star Wars Gamer) had they not introduced a risky business decision: to bring Poly aboard.

:) Welcome to (posting to) the boards, Gallo22! :)

Let me get this straight...

You've got no problem with the quality of Dungeon magazine, so that's not the issue ( :D ). You're not complaining about the magazine in relation to any other product, or type of product, so that isn't a problem. You're not even concerned about the additional mini-mags that get attached to Dungeon magazine, so that isn't it either.

You are merely wondering if people feel comfortable paying $6.99 for 100 pages every month when they used to pay $7.99 for 180 pages every other month, right?

Personally, I do not have the slightest idea. I just wanted to welcome you out of lurkerdom and try to seem somewhat on topic. :)

Dungeon #85 ( April 2001 ) was 96 pages.

For $5.99.

So think of the price going up 1 buck from the cover price from years ago. No big deal, really eh?

I think we all got spoiled with the large page count in the double format issues. Now we are back to reality.

If only we lived closer, Ranger REG. With a pair of scissors at hand, you and I could be served by a single subscription.
In a perfect world, Star Wars Gamer is still in circulation, Poly gets a monthly 96-page treatment as separate magazine, and Dungeon go monthly with Dragon. In a perfect world, the citizens of the entire US of A does not have to pay any income tax (federal or state). But this ain't a perfect world, huh?

If I can tolerate paying taxes and having Dung on the flip side of my favorite magazine, I'm sure you can, too.

Unless of course, you want to see the final issue of Dungeon this year. :D

Poly includes some D&D material (including the LGJ). I'm confused by people complaining about the the Poly section with the inclusion of an adventure set in Greyhawk. Darn those sneaky people, putting things like that into Dungeon!

So the mags changed a little bit, from time to time that happens. The big fat two monther was really cool and an excellent deal, but now we get it more regularly and smaller magazines will proabably be more manageable.

The mini-games have had some stellar moments (Tweet's gama world, the delta green game) and some flops (another WWII game?). I don't seem them continuing for much longer, especially as WotC and everybody-and-there-dog starts producing Modern settings.

Honestly the two adventures I'm more familiar with have had some serious editing issues (Beyond the Light of Reason and Life's Bazaar). A lower page count should translate into cleaner adventures. I'll loose a few pages, overall, for that.

If Dungeon's survival would depend on Poly, this would be an entirely different situation, indeed.
Just out of curiosity, WHO said that the magazine wouldn't have survived last year without Poly?
Chris Thomasson or someone else from WotC/Paizo?
Do you have a link to that statement?
'Cause under these circumstances I'd continue buying Dungeon.

Of course, if it's just the statement of some Poly fan....

Hi, I'm back. I would have replied sooner, but for those of you that don't know, Uptate New York got nailed by an ice storm and that kind of included me. I'm back at work and can reply.

Pretty much what is said above is what I'm saying. Dungeon/Poly is a good magazine. I'm just trying to figure out it its good enough for what the cost is? Many of you have had good points, both pro and con. To add to what I originally wrote when I started this thread, I really don't use the magazine alot for running adventures, only from time to time as a filler. I mostly run my own home made adventures. But, thats ok with me. I've enjoyed the magazine just as a good read and I like to use ideas and maps from Dungeon for my own use. Occasionally the Poly side has something that interests me like the Gamma World issue, but mostly I look at it once and its forgotten. The Living Greyhawk Journal has some real promise though. If they keep giving long articles like that it will help in my decision.

It would also help if Paizo did follow artcles to some of the Poly material. Maybe add more material to some of these mini rpg games the have each month/bi-month.

It was said by one of you that maybe we got spoiled with a large page count when normally it did not have that many pages. This is a good point. But I also remember paying $20 for 6 issues of 5-6 detailed adventures and I also used more of the adventures at that time as well.

I think I'm still on the fence and probably will be until I see the next few issues to make a final determination for myself on whether or not its worth it to keep getting Dungeon. I might just buy an occasional issue that catches my eye.

Thanks.
