Dungeon Master's Guide II

Personally, I think that a book like this could be great, if it lives up to it's promise and isn't just a bunch of pregen stuff. How many people have gamed with poor DMs at one time or another? Raise your hands now. Right, I'm assuming the answer is most of us. So why is a book that potentially makes poor DMs better a bad thing?

I really don't see what all the furor about the name of the book is. So what if it's called DMG2? It could be called The Book of Butt-blasting Turd Rules and it wouldn't change the content any (hopefully :P). As to the point that it makes it sound like it's core, it's not like people don't think that about the Complete line either. There are people out there who will think everything WotC puts out is core, regardless of what it's named. Personally I think the name is fine - call it what it is, more stuff for DMs. After all, the books for more monsters are... wait for it... MM2 and MM3.

Sure it won't chage the content any, it just sounds goofy. Like if they changed Batman's name to Captain Dorkface. He'd still be batman... but with such a silly name, it's harder to take him seriously...

Anyone here ever use his Worldbuilder books?

I find the Extraordinary Book of Names to be a pretty helpful reference.

On a more serious note, are they trying some subversive marketing by making the book brown-covered?

It might just be an image someone threw together for that web blurb, and they messed up....

Yeah, I bet it's a mistake. They did the same thing with Enemies & Allies, though they didn't catch it and it came out with a brown cover. I asked about it one time on a thread over at WotC's boards and one of the designers (Ted Stark, I think) confirmed that it was just a miscommunication with the graphic designers (or whoever did the cover layout).

Sure most experienced DMs might not be interested, but as someone considering trying that role I think I'll probably get it. Just because it's called the DMGII doesn't make it essential - after all you don't need MMII or III do you? - so just ignore it if you don't like it.

Myself, I kind of like that name actually, it's simple and straightforward.

I look forward to learning more about this next year. After quite a while of not seeing Wizards books that really interested me, it looks like next year might be pretty good!

Of course if there are different 'core' rules in it I can understand where the negative reaction would be coming from!
