Here's what you'll find of note in Dungeon/Poly Sept/Oct 2002:

First off, get ready for some sticker shock. The cover price has jumped from $5.99 to $7.99 per issue. Paizo's president Johnny Wilson explains (in his editorial entitled "Hated, Once More!") that it is necessary "in order to insure that I can continue to publish Dungeon/Polyhedron at the present level of quality." He also provides a handy-dandy list of other D20 compatible products ranging from WotC's own Prophecies of the Dragon to products from Mystic Eye Games and Fiend Games (?? that one threw me) to show that Dungeon/Poly is still an incredibly good value in terms of price per page. He also notes that those who already have subscriptions or who get subscriptions before GenCon will get them at the old subscription price.

The Dungeon side includes 5 adventures (including one featuring an illithid-run prison), two Critical Threats, a sheet of monster tokens, and two maps of mystery.

The highlights of the Poly side include:

News that RPGA membership is now free, and plans for a special Chessex battlemat for those who had paid memberships prior to July 1, 2002.

Countdown to D20 Modern features a look at the Agents of PSI campaign model, which blends paranormal mental abilities with the spy genre.

Company Profile: Necromancer Games (interview with Clark Peterson).

"Stop that Monkey!" is an expansion to Thunderball Rally, and features rules for creating and running orangutan characters (!).

And of course, the mini-game: Jonathan Tweet's Omega World. You get random mutations and defects. You start at 4th level. There's three "races" but only one class -- Explorer. Monsters include things like androids, hoops, baders, orlens, and deathbots, oh my! Cryptic Alliances like Friends of Entropy or Knights of Genetic Purity. You get the picture -- it's Gamma World for D20.

Muhahahaha

Sounds like fun.

I am, of course, talking about BOTH "Omega World" and "Stop that monkey".

This is a sad statement, but I almost think the latter will get more use in my gaming group, and we have been waiting for GammaWorld. Then again, we can't turn down a good monkey accessory. That would be insanity...

Well, it's definitely true that Dungeon is till the best value for the money, but I wish they'd take out poly and give me more useable content if they're gonna raise the price. People complain about Dragon being just a promo for next month's product, but at least Dragon's got D&D content. I'm not interested in d20 modern, nor Thunderball Ralley. LGJ at least has some useful info for D&D, polyhedron is absolutely unrelated to Dungeon's main purpose, which is to supply adventures and challenges. Not only that, it's not as if polyhedron even resembles the magazine it was under the RPGA.

Raise the price, replace the poly with another adventure, and you'll see a very happy, very loyal customer.

WHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not when I just bloody subscribed!!!!!! God I already feel like I'm wasting alot of money with that Dungeon junk in there. I have only ever in my life paid for 2 adventures. Sunless Citadel and Of Sound mind. Sunless Citadel becuase I needed something to run on 2 hours notice and Of Sound mind to support Kevin.

Never bought a issue of Dungeon and I never will, I have bought ever issue of Polyhedron since it was rolled into Dungeon and now I'm a subscriber, but I'm not buying Dungeon, I'm paying for Poly, Dungeon is just useless stuff tacked on.

So if any changes are needed it's to get rid off all those adventures that are stealing space from my favorite magazine. God man, you want D&D content theres 30 years of the stuff out there, enough already time for cool new things.

Got to agree with Sigma here. I have no problem with the price increase but Polyhedreon has got to go. I'll admit it, I loved the spelljammer issue but I thought Polyhedreon was a RPGA magazine. The only RPGA stuff is the news and thats only one or two pages and Its always old news by the time the magizine arrives. Put RPGA related info in Polyhedreon or give another us adventure.

Thunderball Rally was really lame. I can't belive they are wasting more space on it in this issue.

That's a great idea. Except for the fact that without Dungeon, polyhedron would fold from lack of subscribers, and then you wouldn't have any magazine at all.

Ultimately, you're supporting my point. The two magazines do not have a lot in common, they do not belong together, and there are people who would be happy to have one or the other but not both.

The price per page breakdown actually includes three values for Dungeon/Poly:

The price per page if you only buy the mag for the D&D adventures (9 cents per page), if you only buy the mag for Poly (.16 per page, which was equal to the best values on the comparison chart provided), and if you buy the magazine for both (5 cents per page). So either way it stacks up as a good deal.
