ToEE might work, but probably wouldn't be the best story.

But please, someone, put a hit out on Joel Silver. He shouldn't be allowed anywhere near D&D property.

Except, Joel Silver won't be writing D&D 3. He'll likely only be an executive producer, or he will simply have Steve Richards run with the project. Sebastian Gutierrez, as I've noted above, has been hire to write the screenplay for D&D 3.

And while Silver Pictures is trying to wrangle the rights to The Temple of Elemental Evil from Wizards of the Coast, there isn't any guarantee that it will happen. I agree it would make a great movie, however.

Now, as for Gutierrez, his best claim to fame is the movie Gothika (2003). My sister watched that movie and says its one of the scariest movies she's ever seen. Now, theoretically, if a screenplay for D&D 3: TToEE, written by Gutierrez, is directed by Gerry Lively then we could end up with quite a horror filled D&D movie, which would be perfect for TToEE.

Anyway, besides TToEE, what other "classic" D&D properties would make a great D&D film? Lets steer clear of Dragonlance and the Forgotten Relams, as those properties would be better suited to their own trilogy of films.

Cheers!

Well, after watching D&D2, I have a bit more confidence. If they pull off D&D3 with the same level of competence, it won't suck.

Other classics? Well, if you leave out Dragonlance (which would make an awesome trilogy) and the Realms (which has potential for a wide number of stories), my next vote would be for the Greyhawk novels of Paul Kidd. Those characters are just too much fun.

I don't think you can do enough justice to ToEE in two hours -- you'd need a 4-hour miniseries at least. Think about it: you need exposition in Hommlet, the Moathouse, more exposition in Hommlet, Nulb, and then a significant amount of time exploring and meeting factions in the Temple to really pull it off.

I don't think your classic dungeon crawl will turn into a good movie on screen though ToEE is awesome. However, there are a lot of potential in books they've released. Any of three below would make a good movie if done correctly:

• R.A. Salvatore's Homeland or Crystal Shard. Good stories that would adapt well for film. And Drizzt could make for some awesome choreography.

• Darkwalker on Moonshae. Old classic. Would be awesome on screen.

• Dragonlance. This is pretty much a no brainer.

In a Hollywood were video games and other properties get developed into terrible movies, one would think that D&D would get a second shot. Doom, Bloodrayne, Aeon Flux, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil? Come on, give us a good D&D movie! In light of the hugeness that was LotR, I'm surprised D&D hasn't been given its due yet...

My only reservation w/ ToEE is that there is no way they can do it justice under two hours. And is a straight to video production going to warrant a 3 hour show? The story is obviously valid and would lend itself to film, but there a quite a few plot neccesities, I mean, let's face it, the original set of modules was T1 - T4.... it took four mods to complete and the RttToEE was a booklet. The story goes from level one to level nine. When it was written, that could take nearly a year of play. I would rather they come up with another one off, non-mod plot.

Now if they decided to make a TV show out of it, I would think a long plot like ToEE would be great. Season 1 - ToEE, season 2 - Sinister secret of Saltmarsh, season 3 - Assault on the slavers, season 4 - Against the Giants, season 5 - Shrine of the Kuo Toa / Demonweb pits, season 6 - Tomb of Horrors (or something like that).

Then they could do a spin off show set a few years later starting with .... RttToEE. :)

All right, let's think about this a moment. The big, bad evil demon in the bottom of Temple of Elemental Evil, after you get through all the cool-looking elemental cultists and nodes...

...is Zuggtmoy, the evil queen of Mushrooms and Fungi.

In a movie.

It works for the module, but as a movie? I'm having a hard time visualizing that concept NOT getting ridiculed. In fact, it might get only slightly less ridiculed than a movie based on the Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. :)
