Dustin Clingman on Crossballs!

Dustin Clingman (of Blackmoor fame) was just on Comedy Central's debate show parody- called Crossballs. The gimmick behind the show is that the producers call in real experts and pundits to debate a controversial topic... the thing is, they don't know that the're actually debating with the show's cast of comedic actors. The actors' job is to walk the line between farce and plausibility, while expressing absurd viewpoints.

At any rate this episode was about video games, and he was one of the experts. I feel bad for him, and I hope he's not upset about it, but I thought I'd share my shock at seeing a fellow gamer and colleague on TV.

I've seen this show more than a few times and I am always amazed. How can these people not figure out that they aren't being taken for a ride?

Well, to Dustin's credit, he had a look on his face quite a few times where it looked like he knew he was being had.

At least Zeitgeist Games got a plug on national TV.

As for how the show gets away with it, I think they taped the first season before airing the first episode. Other than that, I imagine that while you're in the moment defending your position against viewpoints that you already consider absurd, it's hard to see what's really going on. The Host does a good job of being a skeptical straight man, and he has just the right amount of irritability for this type of show.

Hey guys,

Despite my low post count, I am a hardcore lurker on these boards. When someone casts Summon Monster I, I must dutifuly appear for 1 round/level of the caster.

Yes, I did do a stint on the show. In my defense, the producers of the show very well hid the fact that it was a farce. Within about 5 minutes of being on the show (like when the guy starts saying game developers are racist) the jig was up. I thought about getting up and leaving, but then I thought that more people would probably pay attention to what I was saying in that context than a typical talking head news show. Anybody who knows me will verify that I am a total clown from the go, so it was probably about time I got punk'd myself. :)

I did my best to defend myself and the game industry without getting ape-like. After the show, the producers knew that I had been in on it from the go. I told them that I would have done a better, more entertaining job if they had told me the truth about it all.

I didn't see the actual final edit, so I don't know if they made me look any stupider than I normaly do in my regular life. :) Those of you who do and don't know me, have a laugh at my expense... Oh yeah and to make this worth the time and potential shame I must endure... Buy Blackmoor! It's on Preorder at Goodman Games.. www.goodman-games.com
