Dwarven Defender Elves

had one guy try to impose steam explosions on ice substituted fireballs on fire elementals... the BEST part was me explaining the new tactic of summoning fire elementals in order to double the blast radius of our fireballs, multiply the damage by half in the central blast radius (20ft) and dispose of things post haste
...and that, your honor, brings us to the point where I began to assault both defendants about the head and face with a rolled up newspaper while yelling "No! Bad! Bad gamer!"

By the rules of the spell, which don't leave much to interpretation, imo, the character would retain all prior class information, but they would have to continue on as something else after the reincarnation... perhaps returning to Ranger, since that was his starting class, and is quite appropriate for an elf.
By the wording of the spell, he would indeed retain his previous class abilities. However, by the rules of the game he would be unable to actually use the dwarven defender class abilities (other than BAB, Saves, and skill points), as he no longer meets the prequisites.

This is the same as a character with a strength of 14 and the Power Attack feat. If he takes strength damage that reduces his strength below 13, he still retains the feat but can no longer use it.

I believe this is the intent of the rules, although to be honest I'm not sure if I would actually enforce this if it happened to a player in a home game. Being an elf is punishment enough.

No, actually by the rules of the game, this is totally wrong (unless the PHB has some section which is missing from the SRD that I've missed)

This is totally right, BECAUSE the rules say:

"Some feats have prerequisites. Your character must have the indicated ability score, class feature, feat, skill, base attack bonus, or other quality designated in order to select or use that feat. A character can gain a feat at the same level at which he or she gains the prerequisite.

A character can’t use a feat if he or she has lost a prerequisite."

However the same is NOT true of prestige classes.
The rules for THOSE say:
"Prestige classes offer a new form of multiclassing. Unlike the basic classes, characters must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class. The rules for level advancement apply to this system, meaning the first step of advancement is always choosing a class. If a character does not meet the Requirements for a prestige class before that first step, that character cannot take the first level of that prestige class. Taking a prestige class does not incur the experience point penalties normally associated with multiclassing.

So in other words - you can get into a PrC, lose the prerequisites and still continue to advance in that PrC, no worries.

You know, you could have chosen a less confrontational (and downright rude) way of disagreeing with me. I found it "totally" offensive.

In any case, you appear to be correct in this instance. In the 3.0 DMG they had a section on what happens if you no longer meet the requirements for your prestige class. (Basically you lost all class benefits except for skills, BAB, Hit Points, and Saves.)

I had not noticed that they completely removed that section when they revised the rules for 3.5.

*shrug* Good to know.

My original post composition had the "you're totally right" bit first, and then the "you're totally wrong" bit afterwards, which would probably have made you feel less irked by it.

If your sensibilities were offended, then please allow me to make reparations.

I recommend the original poster check out the Stoneblessed PrC from Races of Stone. It has extremely low prereqs and is only 3 levels long, and when you're done with it you count as a dwarf (or gnome or goliath, but who likes them? ;)) for prereqs of other things.
