Dwarven Defender

First Post
The Prestige Class, Dwarven Defender from the DMG lists the class getting a AC bonus, maxing out at i believe +4 at 10th level.

It does not however say where this bonus comes from or what type it is??

Please help.

P.S. Also has anyone ever played this PrC. I think it is really cool, but would love feedback.

P.P.S. Does anyone know on any other PrC's that are good fighter classes. Not S&F. I dont think any of the classes in that book are any good. Or do you disagree.??

Thanks

It seems to be an "unnamed" bonus. :D Which means that it stacks with anything else - and isn't lost when you lose your Dex bonus to AC (in which case you'd also lose a Dodge bonus).

Check out OA; there are quite a few good ones in there - just file off the "serial numbers" for the clan-specific ones and off you go. :)

The Dwarven Defender gets an ability that he can use 1/day up to 4/day that grants a +4 dodge bonus to AC.

In my opinion, the coolest warriors are just multi-classed fighters.

Fighter/Clerics or Fighter/Paladins are really cool holy warriors, and there are a couple of good PrCs for them in DotF.

Fighter/Rogues are really cool swashbuckler or stealthy types.

Fighter/Wizards are cool battle-mages. They are hard to make work, but when they do that are sooo cool.

There are some cool Fighter PrCs. Dueslist is a very common one. Dwarven defender is pretty cool too. Order of the bow initiate and weapon master are come cool ones from S&F.

Templar and Warpriest in DotF are pretty cool too.

OA = oriental adventures

There are a LOT of PrCs in it, but they have an asian flavor to them, and some of them don't really fit in a normal campaign balance-wise. Frex, some of them get +30 skill bonuses at low level.

I have to disagree on the Dwarven Defender being any good - the fact that they can't move during their 'defensive stance' means that they have the most easily-neutralized special ability of any class. Just back off and shoot them, or smack them with reach weapons, and they can't do a damn thing about it, unless they also have a reach or missile weapon.

Yeah, but great for blocking a doorway, or simply as the basis for a defensive line.

I've been looking at the same PrC for a my fighter. He lacks both the Int and Dex for the other feat chains (of course he has Power Attack, Cleave and Wpn Spec). And so DD would give him something to aim for as he has essentially exhausted a lot of his really desirable feat options.

Although he would have to take his 8th level bonus point to Dex in order to gain the Dodge feat to qualify.

Has anybody actually taken this class and found it worthwhile? The Uncanny Dodge at 2nd level would also prove useful.

I thought that the Dwarven Defender class was useful; I've had a fighter take it (on 9th level). It's more limited than a single-classed fighter, but that's prestige classes for you. ;)

I have to agree with the first post, the dwarven defender does get an unnamed AC bonus, which appears to work similar to a monk's (but there's not description text for it). This in combination with the defender stance ability can *really* pump up an AC above and beyond normal (+8 at 10th dwarven defender level).

I think my next character will be a dwarf, and I'm definitely considering this PrC.

Look it up

Always best to look at the source. The DMG states that "the Dwarven Defender gains a dodge bonus to AC that starts at +1 ... +4 at tenth level." the AC bonus he gets when in defensive stance is also a dodge bonus. I would believe these are suppose to stack with the Dodge feat that's a requirement.

The character would be denied this bonus when flat-footed. I believe I've heard that bonus of the same type don't stack though . . .
