E1: Tomb of Chaos [Judge: Patlin] [Concluded]

I don't have the book on me at the moment, but I will tomorrow. Who does the opening? Rodimus? And which casket?

Rodimus opens the one closest to the statue on the north side (4). It has a cat-headed humanoid bas-relief carving on the cover of the casket. There is something written on the plaque or cartouche beneath the feet of the carving, but Rodimus ignores it as he pushes the top off onto the floor.

Inside is a mummifies corpse, still unmoving. In its crossed arms are 6 crossbow bolts and a 2' long yellow crystal rod. The crystal rod has something written on the small metal cap on the top of it as well.

"If the gnolls had access to this stuff, it seems unlikely they'd have left all this stuff alone. Perhaps they venerated it. None of that stuff's magic, but it would certainly be valuable to the collectors in Orussus. I don't suppose anyone can read this writing. Well, let's get this overwith."

Does Nezrak have a comprehend languages spell prepared? Let's keep opening caskets. We can open them all, then take stuff.

Heading counter clock wise around the room you find:

3: Lid is crocodile headed humanoid, with cartouche. Inside is a small pile of silver coins (200sp) and a small green crystal rod also inscribed.

2: Lid is an ibis headed humanoid, with cartouche. Inside is another mummified corpse. This one holding several dried flowers and a white crystal rod also inscribed.

1. Lid is a scarab headed humanoid, with cartouche. Inside is another mummified corpse. This one is holding a very nice looking longsword engraved with gold-inlayed hieroglyphics and a blue crystal rod also inscribed.

5. Lid is a hippopotamus headed humanoid, with cartouche. Inside is another mummified corpse and a red crystal rod also inscribed.

6. Lid is an asp-headed humanoid, with cartouche. Inside is another mummified corpse holding an orange crystal rod also inscribed. 3 copper coins are arranged in a triangle on it's upper chest pointing towards it's chin.

7. Lid is a ram-headed humanoid, with cartouche. Inside is yet another mummified corpse, this one holding a purple crystal rod also inscribed.

(Note that the only casket that seemed to hold magic was the first one opened)

Percy

"OK. Well the rods aren't heavy. Let's collect those. You don't suppose those rods would fit into those holes we found in the King's room? I would think we could leave the rest, since if the gnolls had wanted anything, they could have taken it long ago."

If the party is able to collect the rods without incident, Percy will advocate heading South, to explore behind those doors on the hallway, near where they met Nestaphae.

At Percy's suggestion, Gorefoot nods and starts to collect the rods, beginning with the one in the cat sarcpphagus. Provided the mummy doesn't come alive and try to eat him, he'll roll out his bedroll, and start placing the rods gently in it.

Gorefoot is able to collect the crystal rods and place them gently in his bedroll.

Does he take the other items in the caskets?

The caskets do not look like they have been opened. Nars is able to determine that the gnolls had certainly tried to get in, but the clasps look solid. Lucky that he found the hidden release.

It looks like Nezrak has Comprehend Languages available. With so much text he reads several of the inscriptions as Gorefoot removes them from the caskets. In order that you opened them:

4 Cartouche: Ksantha Ama; yellow crystal rod: Ksantha;
3 Cartouche: Uarkh Afa; green crystal rod: Uarkh;
2 Cartouche: Sesh Tekhen; white crystal rod: Sesh;
1 Cartouche: Khesbetti Mekharr; blue crystal rod: Khesbetti;
5 Cartouche: Tesher Nehes; red crystal rod: Tesher;
6 Cartouche: Uatch Hefau; orange crystal rod: Uatch;
7 Cartouche: Tekhit Sera; purple crystal rod: Tekhit;

"So, you think these gnolls had the ring, which was the key to these tombs, but never figured out how to use it. Didn't have Nezrak around, I guess." She winks at the elf.

"There's more than meets the eye here. Someone was here, having lighted the lamps and such. And we can't find him. I wonder if those three copper coins pointed to the mummy's chin mean there's something hidden inside him. I think the green crystle rod is magic. We did decide to hunt down the gnolls, though, before we looted more tombs. I say we close them up and come back."

A quick note about time. It has ony been a few hours at most since your encounter with the gnolls. They attacked towards the end of your night. You rested a little bit but carried on. Since then you have fought 1 short battle, had 1 short conversation with Novrne, fought 1 long battle, and come to explore this section of the dungeon. I'd peg it at about 10am on your second day of adventuring in the dungeon.
