I wasn't talking about 2e and don't seem to have said anything to encourage that irrelevant distraction from the fact that 5e clashes with Eberron's Tone on many mechanical levels. Tone is the difference between Scream and Scary Movie. Death saves & yoyo wackamole healing were not a thing in 3.5, and it certainly wasn't designed for PCs to go through the game without regularly gaining/upgrading their magic items like 5e is.
5e misses the mark on Eberron's tone by placing PCs on the same pedestal where you find Superman's world of cardboard mixed with the regeneration of Deadpool & wolverine, that doesn't fit eberron any more than 5e's "magic items are OpTiOnAl" baseline fits Eberron's wide magic world.
It is absolutely possible to run Eberron with limited combat magic items if this is what is causing you trouble. You seem too hung up on ensuring that other people do not have the option of saying "we are using this/these option(s)". When the setting changes the expectations in ways that "NONE" is no longer a reasonable expectation it's kind of important to acknowledge that mechanically with support.
1) All the nations and several major organisations are in a cold war preparing for a resumption of hostilities in which magic and monsters can be expected to play a part. Anyone able to manufacture or sell combat items has exclusive contracts with one or more of these. If the players want a specific combat item, they will have to quest for it.
2) There are several areas of Khorvaire and other places in the world with very different assumptions about magic items.
3) There is very little high-level magic available in Eberron in general. Common items are . . . common, uncommon items can be available, but it might be very hard to find Rare or better items. +1 spears and breastplates aren't going to skew the maths much.
Do you have some other examples or where you're having issues reconciling Eberron with 5e? These forums are a place to ask for advice, and there are several people in this thread who have solved them or otherwise run successful games in Eberron using 5e.
Maybe we could help you?
Do you think that your issues with Eberron and 5e may have the same fundamental root as that particular exchange from the DM?As I type there is even a thread on 5.24's healing kits where someone reports a verbal exchange of a player saying "just kill me" with the GM's follow-up being that they can't because the system won't let it happen.
